So, it would appear I have began a project to rebuild a 90 complete 6bolt to drop in my 91. What all is different between these years? From what I know so far:

The cams are weaker?
The CAS has a different connector
The Coil Pack plug

Is there anything else I should be aware of? I have yet to decide what to build into this engine and what my goals are. I am thinking I certainly want to re-use the rods, and get some 2g pistons to fit them. Do I need to get different cams? How bad are the early ones?

i put a 92 motor into a 90 car....PITA! You have to swap the cas, a wire on the back of the motor for ur tach to work, TB, few vaccum hoses, transistor pack, coil pack, charge piping from 90 has to be used if you dont have aftermarket piping, and my motor didnt have an oil cooler. Its not that the early cams are bad, they're just a smaller grind=less topend. My 92 motor still has the auto cams in it, nothin can be worse than that...what garbage, car pulls HARD until 4500, then it feels like my n/a vw 8v to redline.

You shouldn't have a problem putting the 90 engine in your 91. As long as you use your electronics, sensors, cams and all that it should all be the same. The only major difference between the two years is electronics and the oil cooler. As long as you use your oil filter housing, and your sensors, and coil packs, intake and exhaust, it should just drop right in. The long blocks are the same. Just don't try to use the 90 electronics. Somebody else chime in if i am wrong on any of this. I am 98% sure, oh and I used a 91 engine(parts car pos motor) in my 90 for a month while I was rebuilding my stock motor. So it shouldn't be any different for you. I can be more exact if you need me too.

Thanks for the input here, that's about what I assumed, just change everything over as I get to it. I'll rebuild this one, then when ready pull the other and swap the parts needed to finish it. I have no clue how much longer my original engine will last, it's got 194k miles and I'm running 16psi boost and all the mods listed in my profile.

When I pulled the turbo it looked like it got into a fight with a piston ring or other solid parts thrown from the engine...
