which is harder? where can i find the parts i need to fix the crankwalk before it happens?

unless something new came about, i dont think we know definately what causes crankwalk yet, let alone how to stop it from occuring. Alot of people have well founded ideas though.

Why risk it, it makes no sense to poor your money into an engine that might crankwalk no matter what precautions you take. do it once, do it right. 6bolt.
 
So your saying its impossible to crank walk a 6-bolt? A good engine builder that uses his brain and is as precise as possible with his clearances can build a 7 bolt just as strong. As long as its an earlier model 7 bolt. I personally think the metal just got crappier by the year after 95 or so.
 
Im not saying you cant crank walk a 6bolt. All im saying is there have been very few 6bolts walk as compared to seven bolt. also Im not saying that all 7 bolts will walk either.

If i had a second gen and blew the engine there would be no doubt im going to switch over to a 6 bolt. i have seen a few 7 bolt rebuilds that were done by great shops walk within 10k miles.

C'mon easpecially if you going to go with a big power setup, using a very stiff clutch, your just asking for thrust bearing trouble on a 7 bolt. No matter how good the builder is the 7 bolt might still crankwalk, it may not, but its not a risk i would take.
 
There are many many debates about this, and I doubt you will find a full group of people that will agree on anything.

I chose to do a 6-bolt because I've heard of a few people that have dumped alot of money in a 7-bolt and then it walked and they were out all that money. I'm just paranoid, so I decided to go with a 6-bolt. In contrast, I know of several people that have built 7-bolts that run just fine. In the end, the choice is up to you. A 6-bolt only takes a bit more work than a 7-bolt..couple wires and a slightly modified motor mount.

Choice is up to you, most people think crankwalk is over-rated and I agree...but that being said, I still didn't want the gamble.
 
Is there even any question? Of course a 6-bolt will be harder because of the suttle differences to make it work, but you'll be fine. The 6-bolt is stronger than the 7-bolt, it's not even an arguable topic. Next.
 
let me just say this....... i will be building a 6 bolt probably next fall. im hoping to go with a stock 6 bolt block, cometic head gasket, arp's, dont know what rods pistons and rings yet. as far as the head goes i will probably purchase one of slowboys race heads and build the block myself retaining my hks 272/272's. that and i have a mint 1g intake manifold sitting in my room just waiting to be used :cool:

oh and possibly a fidanza flywheel of some sort and a heavier duty clutch. may not be going act though with all their disc problems lately.
 
heres my .02...i have a 95 GST. first motor went out..5K at the original mitsubishi dealer..second motor went out with only 26K on a professionaly rebuilt motor...now i am on my 3rd motor and i built it myself..6 bolt all the way. i have had no problems. do it the right way :thumb:

There really isn't that much to do different than installing a 6-bolt. You need to buy different parts, but installation isn't any harder than the 7-bolt.
 
All I have to say about the swap, is that its not hard as long as you know what your doing. I do think its easyer to do a 6 bolt swap for a 97-99 2g then the 95-96s. For the 95-96 I have told peolpe to get a 2.4 motor with a 2g head, so they dont have to do any wiring and there car will fire right up, looks clean, and you have more of that twisting force behind you. Im not saying it cant be done but thats just the way I feel about it.If you want to put a 6 bolt in your 2g all you really need is a 91-94 motor and just freshen it up. All the rest of the parts you already have minus the cam angle. So what ever you decide to do dont build a 2g or 1g 7 bolt motor becasue if you use the 1g motor your going to have to do everything you would do for the 6 bolt swap, and 2g 7 bolts are a waste of time and should only be used untill they break or you can do better.
