Hey fellas...

I posted on an earlier thread and wanted to update once I got the head off.
90 tsi awd with 240, 000 kms (140k miles) all stock but I bought it with a pretty bad oil leak by the p/s pump/timing belt area with some traces of coolant. Coolant was clean...no traces of oil. Slight blue smoke after hot start up but fine thereafter and none during boost.

Compression tested at 150 on all 3 except cyl #2 .....I know I did not do leak down.

Can you tell me how this head gasket looks? Some of the head bolt holes were filled with oil - is that normal?

Also I see some valves slightly open from carbon.. im thinking this can throw off compression readings (sorry im an rx7 guy and new to piston engines LOL) They are a little open on cyl 2 & 3.

I noticed minor scoring on cylinder walls but I cant grab the scratches with my nail so is that okay?

Sorry...typing this from my phone in the garage so throwing these out as I think of them..

My plan is to make a daily driver until next year drop in something nice

The first two pictures are of the block surface where the head mates up. Bogus is asking for pictures of the head surface (from the head).

You need to get a mic in there and check to see if the cylinders are barreled.

Yeah, I'd say you definitely have some wear in the cylinder. You can clearly see where the skirts are wearing, especially in this picture. Probably not a good sign.

What cylinder is this?

This was cylinder #4

Here are the head pics - cyl 3 & 4 and 1 & 2 ....2 looks funny and that is where I had my lower compression numbers

Since you have done every thing except rebuild the motor, check for blowby. This pressurizes the crankcase and pushes oil out of valve cover. Also, remember replace spark plug seals on valve cover. not all kits include them but these will definitively start leaking over time and lead to oil in sparkplug valley.

Hey man - Happy Thanksgiving..

I'm assuming by checking the rings? I would have to pull out the pistons which I may be uncomfortable doing but if I have I have to...

That's exactly what I was thinking, valve stem seals and blow by as I had alot of oil in the crankcase even with a new valve cover and spark plugs gaskets

Would the HG show any signs of blow by? Or is it only the rings?
bogusSVO stated to try the oil leak method to give an "idea" by adding oil to each cylinder and rechecking several hours later to see which one looses oil...

I'm thinking at this point to just rebuild and save the headaches...

But now I'm reading about alum rods aren't good for daily driver, forged pistons and thermal expansion, I want good power and a daily driver...almost seems like the stock iron internals may suite me better LOL!
