Ok, so I have had a 95 tsi awd sitting in my yard for a year now and I have decided to get it running as it does not make for good yard art, I bought this car with many problems and I have fixed them all except for the motor knocking at first I thought it was rod knock but I have listened to the motor and the noise is definitly up high I also drained the oil and ran it through a paint filter to see if there was metal and there was none I also pulled the plugs one at a time to see if there would be a change and there was'nt a change . I got an electric listening device from a guy at work and from what I can tell it sounds like a loud taping from around the intake cam but I also changed the lifters and that did nothing, I opened up the oil cap and watched the cam and every time it made a revolution it made the loud tap so now I am a little baffled as the car runs fine there is no irregular idle or smoke out the tailpipe but when I rev the car up to lets say around 2k or so and hold it there then the taping becomes irregular. i am not new to cars and I have rebuilt motors before even thou they were v8's and this would be the first time I have ever ripped into a four cylinder but I was wondering if I could get any Idea's of what else I should look for as it seems to be related to the valvetrain but I have heard of people having knocking noises related to the balance shafts or timing belt.

it is possible that the cams, or the journals are messed up. Pull the valve cover and the cams out and check the the journals, and cam surface for any scratchs, gashes etc...

Other than that I can't think of anything else rotating up there to cause a knock.

Im willing to bet money that it's the lifters. It's common to have them tick very loudly over time. The cars are notorious for this.

Just pick up a set of revised lifters...

If you re-read the original post, he already changed the lifters.

I'd actually try a thicker oil like 20W-50 to see if the noise changes or subsides.

I forgot to also add that I have tried thicker oil and it did'nt change one bit.

I'd follow the suggestion made above that you pull the cams and cam caps and look for any scoring or galling on the cam journals. There could be extra slop or wear that's contributing to your knocking sounds.

Please keep us posted.

When scoring occurs in the cam journals, generally, the aluminum tends to roll and block the oiling hole. At this point, the thicker oil makes no difference because it never gets to the cam journal. Since his noise hasnt subsided with 20w-50, I would also suggest pulling the caps and checking them.

I will check the cams in the morning but I just let it run for awhile and the check engine light came on, I don't know if the noise could have tripped the knock sensor or if this may open the door a little to the problem.

Lucas is not a fix for major mechanical problems... its a band aid.

I would also suggest that you pull the cams... its a decent sized job, but at the risk of ruining them, then jumping timing, and replacing all the valves as well, just do it.

The car may run fine......................now, but eventually it wont. Go to autozone and rent an OBDII Scanner and pull that code. It could possibly be false knock, but it could also be an indication to your problem.

Just for kicks, pull the valve cover and look underneath at the oil baffles. If one of them came loose, it could me smacking around and making the noise you're hearing.

On the OBD II question, the 95 2G DSM was one of the first vehicles to be so equipped, along with some VWs of 95. It wasn't mandated until 96, but since DSM was starting with a clean sheet, it was implemented from the turn.

I just bought a 92 tsi and it has the exact same problem. It ran fine then i tried getting on the highway one day and all i could get was 55. It has been nocking ever since. I pulled the valve cover and the nocking seems to be coming from thin air becuase I dont see anything wrong but its nocking right in my face. The clearance and everything is good. It boggles my mind.

well I'm glad to find out that the 95 dsm's are obdII (I must have been under a rock for awhile). I pulled the valve cover and have yet to get the time to remove the cam caps but while I was there I looked at the sides of the cam bearings to see if I could tell if any had any discoloration or whatever and I did not see any not that I'm saying that they might not be bad but since I am working on this car with the limited free time that I have (trying to start my own buisness) I think I will pick up a code reader and see if that will tell me anything usefull before I get to involved with this mystery knock.

Well back to the original problem...how about piston pin rattle? I believe I am having this same problem with a motor I thought I just finished rebuilding. But there is a hollow pinging that occurs when the motor is free revving, but under load it disappears. Which leads me to believe it is the piston pin. If the noise disappears under a load, that may be your culprit.

i have a 95 eagle talon and rt around 2500 to 3000 rpms i hear this knocking noise. cld it be a rod? the car has no problems starting, it doesnt smoke, but when it is at an idle it does go up and down not by much but does do it. but When i give it full throtle i dnt hear the knocking anymore. idk any help wld be appreciated.
