i'm in the process of swaping the 420A in my GS to a 4G63t, but i have a couple qustions, i know my 420A trann will not does anyone know the number for one that will fit?? and will the 420A harness and ecu work on the 4G63t?

No the harness will not work and neither will the ecu, you need a whole harness from a 4g63t and you need the tranny from a 4g63t, you might be able to use a n/t tranny, but idk

You could use the N/T tranny from a N/T 4g63 but that's about it. As stated above ECU and wiring all need to be swapped out. As far as a tranny goes just find for the 6 bolt or seven bolt that you are swapping in. You can find them in the classifieds here or a junkyard, or money permitting and depending on your goals buy one from shep or another reputable shop.

Wow, are you really doing this, or is this just something you're thinking about?

Consider this excerpt from the Tech Guide for the 2G N/T:

Turbo Engine Swap
This project is extremely time consuming, complex and expensive due to the amount of parts needed to perform the task. The parts alone can range upwards of $5000. The basic parts needed are: Engine, transmission, ECU, intercooler (and piping), fuel pump, complete exhaust system, and possibly a few more things not mentioned. The two options above are definitely better choices for the less experienced. Consider the cost of simply buying a factory turbocharged DSM before attempting this swap.

Almost nothing is compatible between the two cars. The only thing you'll be able to salvage form your current car is a few suspension components, the exhaust (the cat back section) and the interior (most of it).

In no way is that swap worth it.

first of all thanks for the info guys, now on to bussines
i'm doing it with my friend i work as a mechanic at an auto shop and he's a heavy machinery mechanic for the county, so if it comes to tools or equipment we won't have a problem, as for the engine, were still deciding if to buy a beat up gst and gut it for what we want or if to just buy the tranny, engine, ecu and harness, and as for the last post, to us it is worth it we have the extra time and money plus it's what we enjoy doing and we need a project car, and not to mention where is the fun in just buying a a car when you can build it up.

I don't want to turn this into a debate on whether or not you should do this, but I'd just like to say two things.

First, I understand where you're coming from. Many of us work in auto shops, and obviously we all like working with our cars. If this is something you want to do, and you have the resources, then by all means, go for it.

Second, have you considered just building up the 420A? The engine is just as capable as a 4G63 if you can rebuild it with some forged internals. For all your going to spend on the 4G63 swap, you can rebuild the 420A, slap a turbo kit on (or piece one together yourself) and still have money left over.

The 420A is a 2.0L just like the 4G63, plus it's a much newer design. If you build it up right, you'll have a car that can spank any GS-T on the street (uh... I mean the track).

If i were in your position i would definately go through with it. Sounds like a fun project and without all the troubles, it wouldnt be as great when you are done! Good Luck with it and post some pics showing some progress on it. :thumb: Have Fun!

JasonLee of Redefined Rides will swap out a 420a for AWD 4g63 for ~6k.. FWD only may be a little less.. He's extremely busy though..

You're missing the point, he wants to do this himself.

When I had my n/t I researched this and from that I heard of a few of these swaps and no one was able to get the car running right. I just decided to skip all the hassles and trade it for a turbo. It's your time and money and if you can get it to work then there may be soe interest but the general consesus is that it's not worth it.

Not trying to discourage you in any way but in all honesty even if you just went and bought a GST/GSX you still have a long road ahead of you in the tuning/customizing department so why set yourself at a disadvantage of doing this swap when you can just start from a factory turbo application in the first place???

No, not missing the point.. Informing people that this swap is possible, and that it must not be too expensive giving the labor / material price that Jason charges.. Plus it would be good for some one who is trying to do something that someone else has done to talk to the person who has done it, so they no what to expect and what to watch out for.. But If handing out information is not wanted, I'll keep to myself...

question: when you can buy a GSX for around $6000 - $8000 why would you even bother? Then you would have a RS/GS and a GSX for around the same amount, just an observation

Sell the car. start over right with a GSX or even a GST would help. The swap isnt worth the hassle and you will have alot of money involved into a swap.

Has anyone else noticed all the completely biased opinions everyone is giving? You'll probably think that I am biased too since I have a N/T but I also have a '91 turbo. If he wants to do it, let him do it. Instead of everyone shooting him down saying "blah blah blah, trade it in and get a gst/gsx" we should be giving him good advice on how to do things correctly.

VelocitaPaola said in post 7, "I don't want to turn this into a debate......" but it already has.

and now you see why i hadn't replied, i don't really care what other people say, if i want to do it i'm going to do it, and like i said before to me it's more enjoyable to build up my car than to buy it made, don't go nuts that's only MY opinion, and after yesterday i'm defenetly getting rid of this damn 420A, after the car was sitting at my shop for 3 weeks because the ECU burnt out for the second time, i finally broke down and got a new one from dealer for $567.00 i put it in and then i realized the damn PS/AC belt dryrotted so i replaced that and i found that the valve cover gasket sprained a leak, so i replaced that too, when i was all set and done i got a code, i hooked up the scanner to it and the godamn IAC motor had gone bad after 2 months, so i took it out warranty sent me a new one i replaced it, and now the beast runs.

 Some people just like to do things the hard / expensive way. You could have bought an ecu online for $100, isc for $25 and another $30 for v/c gaskets. Belts are $15.

and some people can't read to well, because i did say that it was the second time my ecu fried, because the first time i bought a $150 ecu,oh and actually with my discount the gaskets and belts were only $9.56 so that kinda defies your theory. and were did you see an ECU for $100??

There will never be a fruitful discussion on this topic because of it's very nature.

1. There is no point to this.
2. As someone said said for 6k you can buy a bone stock turbo (since your worried about it being "yours" and mod that.
3. There is no point to this.
4. If you ever actually do it, we would be interested in the time and cost.

Your only fighting against yourself and wasting time and money.
