The car is a 96 tsi fwd. The car is stock aside from an air intake and a stage 1 exedy clutch. It started running hot when I parked it. I was in the process of taking the head off and when I removed the timing belt cover I found a lot of oil build up. My oil pump looks to be leaking too maybe. The oil where the balance belt tensioner came off makes me think the front case gasket and seals may need replacing. So, plan now is to pull the motor and replace all gaskets and seals. What all gaskets should I get? Been looking at several kits on extremepsi. Also plan on going ahead and getting a balance shaft removal kit and egr block from ffwd. Any other ideas or advice on my plan as well as the parts I'm considering?

Put a new radiator in and changed the thermostat. Still was running hot and noticed oil in the water in the overflow bottle.. Never run it really bad hot thought. I do plan on replacing the water pump and will also add the ohm hoses to the list. Thanks!

Absolutely! Made that mistake on my first dsm. This one I have every bolt labeled in a ziplock bag.

Wasn't sure if it was getting all over it from it leaking up ahead or the pan itself.. I plan on replacing the seal on the oil pan too.

So, the next question is do I eliminate the balance shafts while I'm in there or not. I am probably gonna get it running and painted then sell it. I would like to get another project afterwards that's AWD and build it up. Either way it's so nice to be getting back into DSMs!

I kept my balance shafts, but that was just my preference. There is no gasket I believe that was used on the oil pan even from the factory. I believe its just assembled using oil resistant RTV. I just did mine this summer and my car now has 40,000 original miles on it and the pan had never been off until I removed the pan to fix a leak. I can back up the other posts in other threads saying just use RTV and nothing else.

I agree with SlickZL1, if you are just going to sell it then just do your required maintenance and don't worry about any other mods or putting in any more time or money than you have to. There is a lot of people out there that would prefer to have a un-molested car that they can fix up and start from scratch themselves instead of having to figure out why something has been done that they don't like, and back track what a previous owner has done to the car.

Thanks for all the replies, I appreciate the advice.. Now as soon as I bite the bullet and buy an engine hoist I'll get the motor and tranny out and get started on the overhaul.
