There is no starter relay unless you have the anti theft system. If you have the anti theft system the starter relay is behind the radio with the ecm, or in that general area :thumb:

They all have one. The clutch safety switch runs through the relay too. Crude drawings show it below the radio on the right side.

iam sure they have a relay!! from what everyone has told me there is a relay! its the middle one of three under the driver side dash.... and it sounds it will be running tru the clutch safety relay i have disconnected that bad boy so i dont have to push my clutch down and i heard if yo ucould be that so i did it with cnnected and disconnected and my car does still not start i am going to get new starter and a new battery make sure its not that before i try to locate the relay?? well thanks for the help everyone and thanks for your time in reading and posting and gotta love dsmtuners.com thank you fellow dsmers

You can test the relay by subtituting another one of the same part number.

You can also jump from the input to the output of the relay, on the relay's connector socket.

The wire colors are black/yellow, coming in.

And, black/red going out.

Just take a paperclip and jumper the terminals from the front, with the relay removed.

If it starts now, the relay may be stuck open.

There may be ground available at terminal #1 of the starter relay. This will activate the relay opening the relay. (backasswards of most relays) If this is the case, the wire to the clutch switch may be grounded against the sheetmetal under the dash somewhere, or the theft alarm relay is not playing nice with your plan to start the car.

Also, do you hear the mfi relay clicking in the center console when you turn the key to the start position? That would at least tell us if you're getting power to and from the key.

Thanks, and please check these items before spending any money at the parts store. :thumb:

Looking at my chrysler 91 manual it looks like it varies drastically. I'll try to break it down to the best of my abilities :p

Automatic with No Anti Theft- No starter relay. It has an inhibitor switch located in the shifter.

Automatic with Anti Theft- Anti Theft starter relay located behind the radio near the ecm and tcu. It also has a starter inhibitor switch located in the shifter.

Manual with No Anti Theft- Starter relay in the engine compartment. I could not find the drawing for this. I would say it's with the other relays on the Left Hand (drivers side) fender.

Manual with Anti Theft- Anti theft starter relay located behind the radio. Also there is an additional starter relay which I belive is with the group of relays on the Left hand fender.

I hope this helps. It's hard to navigate this stupid PDF manual :p makes me urn for my hardbound that is at the shop :(

Is the wiring different on a 90?

I'll pull a diagram off Alldata or Shopkey tomorrow, and compare them.

He mentioned a clutch switch, so we know it's a manual tranny.

I just used my hard copy 1991 factory service manual for locations and wiring colors.

The wiring diagram shows that jumping across terminals #4 and #3, of the starter relay connectors on the relay panel (with the relay removed), will basically take the relay, and everything else out of the equation. If the key passes 12 volts out, the starter will get it. And, btw, that paperclip will get hot, so only do it for test purposes, (a better way would be to make a test jumper wire with two male blade ends, with a fuse inline. Its what I use at the shop.) I just suggested it because it's quick and easy, and everybodies got a paperclip handy.

I can shoot a quick pic, of my 90 gsx tomorrow, if that would help.

It's buried under three feet of snow out in storage...resting...:p

Does the mfi relay, (located near the ecu, on the right dash support bracket) click when you turn the key to the start position? That's the starter leg of the mfi relay activating the fuel pump to prime/power the fuel pump during starter operation. This quickly/easily verifies the key is getting, and passing 12 volts.

Another way to troubleshoot this would be to jump battery voltage onto the starter solenoid terminal at the starter, to verify the starter is operational, before we get too carried away chasing relays.

Edit: the alarm/starter wiring on a 90 is different, according to the alldata diagram I printed today.

Dieseltech, my most humble apologies. I just spent a half an hour chasing the relays online, and I must say, you are correct, the 90 is different. As near as I can tell the starter relay is still located in the same position. It depends on whether the car has the theft system, or not, but like you said, the online diagram/format is confusing

I'll take my paper copy factory service manual over alldata any day.
