hi,
i am interested in putting 18" motegi MR-7 wheels on my 1991 plymouth laser. my only problem is i do not know if they will fit in the wheel well with tires. if anyone out there has 18" wheels on their laser....please let me know so and also tell me what size tire you have on the wheel. i would also like to know how snugly they fit in the wheel well. if 18's dont fit i guess i will have to go for 17 inch wheels. what is a good size tire that would fit a 17" wheel?

thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me

opps, sorry....just read the original question.

If you are concerned with speed along, you'll prolly need to downsize your rims.

If you are concerned with handling, then you will prolly want to go to a +1 size of 17" rims.

if you are concerned with looks, then you will prolly want to go to a +2 size of 18" or if a little crazier, a +3 size of 19" (if you can get it to fit).

the rational being........generally, larger rims = heavier rims

as wheels are part of the unsprung weight of the car (not supported by the suspension) weight affects the ability of the car to get to speed in a major way.

if you want to just go fast, then downgrade to a smaller rim (i dunno what size would be good since I am not a drag fan and would never consider going with smaller rims).

if you want to go fast, and maintain some handling capabilities of the car and maintain some decent looks, buy some light-weight 16" rims. get Racing Hart, Volks Racing or Advan rims....those really light weight (but very expensive) rims.

if you want to go fast, handle even better and look even cooler, get light weight 17" rims from the same names mentioned above.

well.......you get the idea........

if for some reason those light-weight rims are too expensive, then AT LEAST get a "lb for in" rim. ie......17" = 17 lbs. Anything heavier is too heavy.

heheh....excuse my lengthy reply.....but I am bored at work :D

ok......remembered the forumula

tire size ==> Width/Aspect Ratio - Diameter

stock size = 205/55-16
formula = Width x (Aspect/100) x 2 + Diameter in mm
so for stock size (16" = 406.4mm) , its = 205 x 0.55 x 2 + 406.4 mm
so overall diamter is approximately 631.9 mm.

for a +1 upsize, its 215/45-17
so ==> 215 x 0.45 x 2 + 431.8 = 625.3 mm
so the difference is about 6-7mm SMALLER then stock size.

does anyone know if 225/45-17 will fit the DSMs? Or would it be too wide, and cause rubbing?

Hrmm, I always thought that the overall tire + wheel size didn't get all that much bigger if any. I always thought that the wheel got larger and then your tire got thinner. So basically you would have the same rolling diameter. Not sure on that though.

uuummmm...................................... no

Thats doesn't mean more speed, that means youre speedometer is off because your wheels are to big now.

Well... yeah... that's what i was thinking... when you increase the rim size, you decrease the wheel profile. Otherwise you have issues like your spedomenter/odometer reading wrong, etc.

Plus, going to a massive rim will probably cause a headache in getting it to fit without rubbing on various things in your wheelwell.

ahh... nice choice =] you always want to stay within the same diameter of the stock wheel. The stock diameter is 24.9".. with 205/55/16's. Now the closest to that with a larger rim size would be 215/45/17. I believe you don't have tow orry about the rims offset if ur only getting 17's, just make sure its not lower then 40mm. Or else the rim will stick out from the fender and when u turn, you'll get marjor rubbing all overrrrr.. which is a no no. =]

Okay.
My eagles are about shot and i need new tires. my friend says I can HAVE his brand new 215/60/R16 tires. they were on firebird rims, but never hit the road because he sold his bird and bought a brand new formula. they are in great condition, just need to know if they will fit my stock tsi fwd rims...the 16 inch ones. only issue i see is rubbing up on the side walls.

yes i am at stock height. i hate lower springs #@%#@%#@%#@% up your tire wear and are sh*tty on your ass as well. i didn't want to take them if i couldn't use them, but knowing i can. thank you.

I currently have 16" wheels with 205/55/16 tires. Im getting a free set of Enkie 17" wheels, and I want my new wheels/tires to have as close as possible to the same total diameter as my old setup. Does anyone know any good websites that show total outisde diameters and circumferences for different tire sizes?

215/45/17 or you could probably fit 225's on there. i have 225/50/16 and happy with them. wider is definitely better, especially for us WWD'ers!!!

plus sizing, i believe tire rack has a good explanation of how it works :)

You know, you can calculate it pretty quickly:
d = rimsize + 2*(width/profile)/2540

so for your current wheels its 16 + 2*(205/55)/2540 = 24.9 ish

Or try this link, i think it'll give you a pretty good idea of what tire sizes you can use: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

just find a size for the 17"s that doesn't change your diameter too much, a 215/45/17 should do alright?

Changing overall tire diameter on your car will affect your speedo.

Going to a larger diameter tire, your acceleration will suffer slightly but you will get a higher top end speed.

Going to a smaller diameter tire, your top end will suffer slightly but you will get slightly better acceleration.

I have a 91 talon tsi awd and am going to buy 17" rims with 215/45/17 tires and I am wondering if these will fit on my car?

on a 17x7 wheel you can use 215 45 17, 225 45 17, 235 45 17, 235 40 17. It depends on what you want. The 225 45 is about the closest to the stock tire height that you'll get. I personally use 235 45 17 for that little extra width & I like to protect my rims a bit w/ the little extra sidewall bulge. I personally feel the 215s are too narrow for 7" rims & look like this \___/ & expose the rim to every little curb that you can possibly find.

I have Volk Racing Gram Lights 57c 17 x 17.5, how is the maximum tire width that I can go and what will give me the right speed, gear ratio, and acceleration. Some people told me 225/45ZR but I was wondering if I can go with 235.

I currently have 225-50-16 on my car. My 2 front tires are bald and the rear still has 90% thread. Is it ok to run the front with 205-55-16 without damaging anything?
