Langley,
I can't seem to find a short shifter that is made for a 1g DSM. Does anyone know where I can find one and who makes it? Does the B&M shifter for the 95-99's work in the 90-94's or is the layout different?

Get the pilot motorsports one...

COmpletly changed the feel of the shifter... Actually shortens the throw...

This + BG Synchromesh are the best mods to my car I have ever done!!!

why buy a short shifter. i bought a metal jig saw blade and cut it....worked great....get universal shift knob(dont use threads anyway) then attach it...mine works great....shortend it approx i wood say 2 1/2-3 inches....u can take it as low as u want as long as the knob does not hit. if u want try it then if u dont like it or dont think it will work , buy one....mine is great! :thumb:

A true short shifter shortens throw, not height of the shifter. Hacking your shifter down wont make your shifts any closer together. The pilot motorsports shifter makes my throws shorter, and more precise. If you want your car to shift like stock (like shit) but look like it is shorter, then by all means, hack your off. But if you actually want a performance increase get this short shifter.

I've read that cutting the shifter doesn't actually shorten the throw but it does give the illusion of a shorter throw. I would rather get a REAL short shifter.

Hrmph. Well, I'm not sure it's so minimal as to call it "an illusion", but cutting a shift lever down does change the distance you're moving the knob- it just doesn't change the distance the lower half of the shifter is moving whereas a true short shifter does. The effect of shortening the stick is the same as holding the stick closer to the pivot: just as making the shifter two feet long would make your hand travel a lot further per gearchange, making it shorter will reduce how far you have to move. But the shifter is still the same. When you use one of the kits to change the pivot point, the actual distance the knob moves is reduced although the stick is only slightly shorter than stock -which means it's not much further from the steering wheel than stock.

I still wonder what the big difference is between 1G and 2G shifters that no one has adapted the B&M to fit the 1G.

yeha i understand....sorry about that guyz... my bad... hey look on ebay...search 89-94 eclipse...go to like the second or last page...there are a couple short throws on there from 60 $ and up....im considering getting one now that u guyz explained to me.... i was underthe inpression my hack job was really working...haha....

If you are a 1G who is looking at just making the shifter shorter and not installing an actual short shifter, pick up the 2G shift knob. It is less than half the size of the baseball bat 1G shift knob and gives the feel of a much shorter throw.

Look here.

Shifter Diffs.

This is a comparison between the '90 and '91-94 shifters which are VERY different. It is to my understanding that the 2G is much closer to the '90 model year in design. :dsm:

Yeh. So you set up the numbers on the CNC mill to spit out 500 to fit. The design wouldn't have to be changed.

They must not believe the market's out here. Or maybe they don't make Timkens that size.

your worried about how far the shifter moves bottomline right? so you lose a SMALL amount of lever advantage. The same thing happens when you reduce the throw. you still require more force to go the same distance.. infact it takes more effort because it wieghs more. I cut mine off and used the steel bushing setup... it shifts awesome... besides that did you ever notice how the whole assembly moves when the engine torques over if you could solid mount the engine that would help too.. instead of it trying to get away from you everytime the engine changed angles under the hood. man I wish I could post up some pictures. oh wait is that little yellow box.. uh.. let me get the digital camera.. ill be back in the morning
