160K Timing Belt or new motor?

I bought my 95 talon tsi with a blown T-Belt.

I Want this car to run asap, Now i cant decide if i want to drop the cash for a remanufactured motor ($2,225) or just go with a rebuilt head & have the shop replace the timing belt.


Is the current motor even worth trying to salvage, Its got 160 thousand miles on it. Should i attempt the tbelt?

It would be around 500 for a rebuilt head and then i would need all the gaskets,the timing belt parts etc.


also.......Do the valves destroy the pistons?


Also its an automatic, Is crankwalk something to worry about if i do decide to fix the current motor?

i just pulled the spark plugs and removed the valve cover. #2 cylinder plug is covered in oil.

While crankwalks actual cause is really unknown, I do believe that crankwalk is only a tad bit less common in an automatic than a manual due to the stress of a throwing out bearing. I could be wrong tho.

Valves do not typically destory the pistons. Id say that if you have bent valves, you probably dont have to worry about the pistons.

Your engine choice really depends on a few things:

1) Do you like the auto? If you dont, you might as well go 6-bolt with manual tranny.
2) How deep are your pockets?
3) If you have any signs of crankwalk - usually by 160 k you can tell if you're ever going to have the walk or not. If you have signs, its time to get the hell out of dodge.

the oil on cylinder 2 spark plug would mean blown head gasket right?


Im thinking of just buying a rebuilt head & getting a shop to swap heads and do the timing.




Anyway to test compression without the timing belt on?

can test compression with bad valves, your going to need a new head before you can do that. Look at the top of the cylinders check for cracks and etc, maybe file out the burs agetthat new head on.

he cant do a compression test if he has no timing belt. you got to pull the head and see what the damage is and go from there. in most cases, he bent 8-16 valves and is going to need to replace the cylinder head.
