- Background
- I remember this car from when I was around 6 or 7. It was my sister's first manual transmission, she wrecked it once, but it was an easy repair, only cosmetic damage.
After she grew out of it, it got sold to a friend of my dad. Not two months later, my dad's friend brought it in because he missed a gear and over revved, bricking the motor. It was easier to replace the motor than rebuild, which was more expensive than the guy was willing to pay. Dad decided to take the eagle in exchange for some free work on the guy's kid's car. This was around 9 years ago. He swapped a re-built 4G63 (6 bolt flywheel!) in and got it running. It ran a little bit rough, he's not sure about the issue if it was transmission or electrical. Once he couldn't figure it out, he parked it in the garage and it's sat there ever since. He occasionally pulled it out every other year to check compression, but it's mostly been a work table for him. It still runs and moves, just struggles a bit on power. He says it makes a bit of a low "growling" sound while running. The same issue that got it parked 9 years ago is what I'm looking to tackle.
I've done minor work with my girlfriend on her older Camry and really got bit by the bug to get a car to work on for myself. I knew about my dad having the car in his shop sitting but had always been too nervous to ask since it's a REALLY NICE CAR and I'm not stupid enough to touch dad's nice things haha. I mentioned one day to him I was looking at a used Celica, and he offered to let me work on this one and use it as my own project. I want to take this one to autocross, road racing, and of course cars and coffee meetups!
Included an old picture of it in it's former glory and a couple photos of it's current state as an autoshop table.
