Whats up guys, well Ive been having an ongoing problem with my car lately. Its equipped with an E316g + all supporting mods...motor is currently bone stock internally cept for the addition of 272/272 cams + 3mm lifters. Ive been losing coolant and engine temps always seem to be higher then normal. At first I replaced the radiator cap to a Mitsu 3000GT VR4 which is a 1.3 bar cap...and it remained the same. I also removed the stock thermostat which also helped. I then added a newer style metal radiator core + slimline fan, which helped engine temps but on 20+ psi pulls the engine would still get hot no matter what (with the addition of "popping" during the high psi pulls). Well I started to question it thinking maybe the stock head gasket finally called it quits. Today I did a compression check and it was 135, 135,140,135. There is no mix of coolant + oil anywhere in the oil. The car does feel "down" on power at the moment (yes I did a boost leak check and it checked out ok). So even tho my compression test tested "ok" could it still be a bad head gasket? Any information would be appreciated.

Are you watching your coolant temps with a logger? I would be interested to find out if your coolant temperature sensor isnt fried. If your coolant temps are reading around 330 degrees it's fried.

Actually I forgot to add, that the coolant temperature sensor does read off alot of times...Sometimes it reads hot but then i can literally touch the upper radiator hose, it does get pressureized pretty well. After doing a couple of hard pulls...3 or 4...and I park the car let it idle...I will see coolant/water coming out of the overflow almost everytime.

If those compression numbers were made with a warm engine, then it seems that you are probably in need of some new rings and valve seals. Last year my compression was 140 across the board, and here i am today planning a block rebuild because i have rediculous blow by and poor power. The factory manual says 120 is end of the line for a 1g with stock pistons. Have you tried the oil check on VFAQ? You add a little oil into the piston and retest the compression. If you get a drastic raise then most likely the rings are shot. Good luck.

Eclipse yes I did the compression test with the throttle plate open on a warmed up engine. I dont know what whats actually wrong with it yet, but im hoping maybe the head gasket is playing a strong role in the down performance area. Im still curious to know if compression numbers can reveal a bad head gakset in my case?
