What tools should I have for starting at a dealership?

Im going to UTI right now...the tool set they give you is pretty basic. All metric and standard sockets and end wrenches. And a tool box, dead blow, tire pressure gauge, simple sh!t like that. Its a nice tool set, real handy in the garage, and possibly on top of a big rolling tool box full of all your impact stuff.

Rumor has it, when my buddy graduated, he calculated out how much all the tools really cost, including the box... the so called $1100 tool set is about $800-900 average.

I got it easy, just started as a lube tech down at Toyota...all tools supplied.

I go to New England tech and i graduate in december. Thank god. $26,000 later. im dead broke and already got a tool box and all 3/8, 1/2, drive everything. 1/4 as well but not all. i got alot of open end wrenches, while snap on costs the most its not always the best i found out so far. they offer our school 51% off which is good, but they jack up the price a little bit then offer it to us. Matco is great to us, 50% on most items, 30% on everything else. I cant wait to graduate and take out a personal bank loan and buy like $2000 in tools with my discount from snap on and matco. hurray! I love working on cars.

Dont blow your money on Big name stuff but dont buy cheap stuff eather. just remember its you that make the money not your box and high end tools. I understand that you need good tools but there are limits. Get a IR titanium gun.. Its so sick nasty I love it..

Yes, you have to supply your own tools. I'm sure some places don't, but they are few and far between.

i go with matco and also some snap-on tools like the line wrenchs and air hammer but my tool box alone costs $19,565 and thats no tools at all. my tools are probley worth over $20,000 but its taken years to get all that. i started out with a $250.00 box and about $800.00 of tools and look where it got me now. a mazda master tech.

thats true. thank god i was told that when i started to buy mine
