Ok this lifter tick is really pissing me off. It appears to be getting louder each day so I decided to get some revised lifters. But to replace them I'll have to redo timing. That's what I heard. When I replace the lifters I'll replace the timing belt too since it's time to do that as well.
So I was wondering. What are some things that could go wrong by redoing timing? (hp loss, chance of engine failure if not done properly?) Let me hear your thoughts.

I would not think you would have any loss of hp. You can however screw your engine up if you do it wrong though cause timing is everything with interference engines. You will also have to redo the lash otherwise you replace the valve cover and you will still have that ticking sound and have to rip the cover off again which sucks. :dsm:

Only thing that can go wrong is you smash the valves if you set the timing up wrong.

Align all the timing marks and you will be fine. Good time to replace the water pump and auto tensioner for the timing belt though. And if you still have your balance shafts, get a new belt for that too.

FYI, you don't actually need to mess with timing to redo your lifters. You can rotate the Cams with a socket wrench. In fact the official mitsubishi method involves using a tool to pry the rocker arms off the lifters, no need to remove the cams.

Changing the oil is just a temporary solution. The ticking will gradually appear again. I want to get rid of the ticking for ever. Speaking of lifters......do you guys think that th 3gen ones are better than the 2gen ones? I would get the 3gen lifters rather than getting the revised ones for $150

There are three generations of lifters.

From VFAQ:

The first version of lifters used on early 1Gs (possibly up to early 2Gs) had extremely small top holes. The second version had a top hole about 3-4 times larger, and a larger groove on the side. First version is on the left, second on the right. Note that the second version was also slightly shorter in total height than the first. The third and latest version (as of 2004) is the same total height as the first version, has a top hole the size of the second version, and a side oil feed hole larger than the first or second version for even more oil flow to the followers.

So yes, the third gen lifters are better than the second gen lifters, but that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with 1g, 2g, 2000+ eclipses. Second and third gen lifters are both called referred to as "revised," the third gen being the second revision.

So 3gen lifters are better than 2gen lifters? I got 2gen lifters right now and they're making a sh!tload of ticking.

You also do not have to replace or redo your timing belt to install lifters.
