looking at buying another talon, guy did the timing belt but when he turned over heard that the valves were tapping. He claims to have stopped right away and never turned it over again. Car never started.

What kind of damage could have been done? Possible that if I retime it that no damage has been done? or is it pretty much 100% that it needs a new head/possible pistons?

Well if he heard them tapping then more than likely they're bent. There wouldn't be any noise if there wasn't any interference.

The first time I did my timing belt I put the timing plate behind the crank sprocket on backward. So it looked like it was timed right but really was pretty far off. When I started it the valves were tapping pretty loud. I shut it off took it back apart and figured out what was wrong, pput it back together checked the compressoion and it was fine. That could be a possibility. I would get the timing right and recheck it before I did anything.

Yeah thats what im going to do im going to redo the timing after I get it and see if thats the problem. And if it still doesnt work, off comes the head.
