Tuning explained?

Can anyone link me to? explain to me?

What tuning consists of?

I am really lost here and i want to tune the car myself so i can call it my own , there's some things about knock, etc and stuff like that i don't understand, maybe if someone pointed out to me the basics like tuning with S-AFC and fuel regulation that would help.

I plan to tune in the end with dsmlink but want to do it by myself.
