I am in the middle of rebuilding my transmission in my 2g GST. My parts are soposed to arrive tomorow and I will embark on the jouney of reassembling it.

I have gone off of the VFAQ here: Visual Frequently Answered Questions - Home Page for most of it but the author really doesn't get into the shimming ranges at all. He gives good examples of how to figure out what thickness of a shim you need and the solder measuring technique.

Will some one post the preload ranges and the endplay ranges that are normal for each shaft and the differential.

(I was trying to post this in the drivetrain tech section but I don't have access, I guess i'm still too much of a noob)

Thanks,
Chris

Amazingly you're in luck - what a coincidence! ROFL I just rebuilt my 99 GST, did the proper shimming, and it now shifts like butter. BTW I used the article here (along with factory manual) and it was great even though it's for AWD: Dre.
Factory spec ranges for shafts:
Input shaft end play (F5M33): 0 - 0.05mm (0 - .0020")
Intermediate gear preload: 0.05 - 0.10mm (.0020 - .0040")
Output shaft preload: 0.05 - 0.10mm (.0020 - .0040")
Differential case preload: 0.05 - 0.10mm (.0020 - .0040")

That is the exact VFAQ I went off of also, I have a haynes manual that I bought but they tell you to take the tranny to a reputable transmission shop because they are very technical blah blah blah.

Thank you so much luv2rallye! Now I won't have any set backs and wonders about to shim or not to shim:thumb:

It's nice to finally hear someone else is rebuilding their tranny themselves. I did mine because an "expert" transmission shop in town I paid $1300 to do it never did it properly and so it only lasted 1 year. In fact the tranny shop that I took it to farmed it out to a manual tranny "expert" shop and when I later took it apart myself, I found all the original shims were in the wrong places. They not only didn't shim it but they didn't even put the original ones back in the same places. One shaft had 2 shims on it and another had none (gee I wonder where it went?). Before this I had never had a tranny apart. Now I feel I'm an expert (at least on a dsm tranny). ROFL Almost all in town manual tranny shops will never shim the shafts at all because of the time and effort it takes (although they all will tell you they did or that it didn't need it) and of course, you'll never know and it will run ok for a while (past their warranty as it did for me). I've lost all faith in local tranny shops and there are a lot as I live in Mpls/St. Paul (largest city in Mn). I went to all of them first for advice/info and when I insisted on talking to the actual mechanic who does the work, they all admitted they don't shim the shafts and all said you don't need to unless they are obviously way off, like you can easily move the shaft back and forth with your hand (so much for preload)! OMG Well that just made my decision. I was going to learn to do it myself (and I have the real Mitsu factory manual to do it properly)! Obviously they aren't going to do it right no matter how much money you give them. And they could care less. In fact most are reluctant to do a manual and many farm it out to someone else as they don't even maintain a manual tranny guy. They all are overwhelmed with too many automatic trannys to fix. There's even a waiting list. The largest has 10 trannys going at the same time, always all autos.

Tip: Before putting tranny back in make sure you view "pivot ball shimming" and "proper clutch adjustment" at Transmission Videos.
Good luck and pm me if you need help. I have lots of pictures I took of everything (just send email address that accepts attachments). I also have the part numbers of all the shims. :thumb:

YAY I'm not the only one rebuilding my own transmission. I thought I was crazy ordering $600 plus worth of parts for it, AND having to do the work, when people are selling "rebuilt" ones with "X" hundred miles on them for $400 or so. luv2rallye's post makes me more confident that I'm making the right descision.
