transfer case leak when out of car

I've had the transfer case out of my car for about 4 months while rebuilding the motor, when I went to clean it up I noticed that most of the fluid had drained out of the output shaft area while I had it laying level on the ground. I just wanted to make sure this was leaking only because I didn't have the drive shaft yoke in place. The seal around the output shaft doesn't appear to be the source of the leak.

Yes, it was probably from just laying down. You should replace that seal while you have it out it's a $5 part that will save you money in the end. If the seal you have on now leaks and you run your transfer case dry, you could run the risk of lock up.

Yep, the yoke from the drive shaft seals the output end. New seal is a good idea.
