Ok, well about 4 months ago, my tranny started popping out of first every once in a while, and I thought it was probably just a synchro, so I didn't worry about it too much. Then it started happening more and more often and I finally took it in to the mechanic to get the synchro replaced (or so I thought) and found out the entire housing was shot. So, I found a used tranny with low miles and put it in with a new clutch, and now the same problem is starting to happen again! The wierd thing is with this tranny, if I go through all the gears when I'm at a stop and then go into first, it will stay in, but the tranny sort of whines in first and sometimes makes a little pop noise when I start moving. I can't figure what's wrong and why the tranny I just put in would have the same problem. Anyone have any ideas? I'm hoping I haven't already destroyed the new tranny. Thanks guys.

What do you mean the entire housing was shot on the first tranny? The only housing on the tranny is the bellhousing and that doesn't really become shotski unless you blow something up and it cracks it or puts a hole through it. I bet you would have had to replace your 1st gear along with the hub and sleeve and syncros and you would have been fine.

sorry, I was confused on the wording. The CASE was damaged and apparently I had a lot of shaft play, and my other gears were starting to get stressed. I was going to get it rebuilt but I found a used tranny for $550 so I just decided to replace it. Do you think maybe the used tranny I bought just has the same problem as my old tranny, or do you think there is something else that is causing this problem? That's what I'm confused about.

the bearings can be replaced to fix that play.sounds to me like he was trying to get your money to rebuild it.but it sounds like your cables need adjusted.we put a 90 tranny in a 92 talon and it sounded like that untill we adjusted the cables.other than that, ask around for signs of crankwalk.

Well, I really trust my mechanic, and he actually suggested I look for a used tranny so I don't think that was it. As far as my cables go, it's 2g so are they adjustable? I've heard they aren't. Maybe I should replace them? Also, how much would you think it would cost to get those bearings replaced?

they should be adjustable on the tranny.they go into a bracket and they can move back and forth there.i dunno how much on the bearings though.theyre roller bearings and they have to be press fit.
