I'm running a built 9:1 6 bolt and an scm61 turbo. At the pump we have 93 octane which is what I run daily, having my boost set at about 22 psi. What are most of you guys doing with your base timing? I was considering advancing it to try and get some more power out of it, but then again I have also considered pulling some timing and turning the boost up to 24 or so. What do most of you guys do?

Do you have a log you can post to see why you worried about your timmming

No I don't have a log, but I know I'm not knocking and my base is set at 5 right now. I'm not worried about my timing, just trying to see which method is best to get the most power out of what I have on pump gas.

Add boost until it starts to knock. You should be getting atleast 18 deg of timing advance with a base of 5.

Right, I was actually getting 18 - 19 at the top of 3rd, but I'm asking about advancing base timing. Is there any benefit to advance either the base timing to say 8-9 and leave the boost alone, or retard the base timing to 2-3 and turn the boost up a tad? I always thought that more timing means less boost can safely be run ( talking about base timing ) and less timing means more boost can be run without knock. ( this is on pump gas of course )

It might be a safe way to run like that, but i doubt you would see any major power increases.

No Log? WTF - Spring is here & Summertime is coming - Intake temps rising every day - leave it alone.

I don't see a DSMLink or some sort of standalone so how do you know your not knocking? If this is solely based on a pocketlogger or something similiar, then just because your timing is not dipping any does not necessarily indicate your not knocking. I can't run more than 16deg (if that) on pumpgas @20psi. When I dyno'd 350, I could only manage 14 degrees total....but this was also in 99F heat.

Violater,

He's got an EPROM ECU with one of Jeff's chips that will show knock on the boost gauge. I have one as well and can verify that it does work.

Cheers!

Andy

My car runs better at 3 deg base timing, vs. 5 deg. What you honestly need to do is get a wideband and tune that thing at the A/F ratio you want, and increase boost from there. I do not see many guys running over 5 deg base, I do however see a few running lower than that. Wideband is what you need, trust me on that. :thumb:

Sell that SAFC and use that money to help fund the WB purchase....

Alright thanks guys. I will just leave it alone for now. I sold the safc a while back already, so maybe I'll just use that money and have ams tune it. I guess messing with the base timing isn't really worth it at this point.

P.S. andy is correct about my stock boost guage reading knock. Right now it always stays at it's lowest point through the middle of 4th gear from a stop. The only time it goes up 1 click is when using the studderbox under launching or at the top of 4th.
