My stock clutch is about done for, not really surprised, the car has 138k miles, and if you didn't see the title, its a 1990 Talon Tsi AWD. Does anyone have suggestions on what stage/brand i should replace it with? Also, i was talking to a friend of mine, not sure how much he knows about DSM's but he said that to replace an AWD clutch you have to take out the engine...I didn't think that was true, but i wanted to double check about that. I'm not really looking for a racing clutch or anything, its just a daily driver for the most part, but i like to mess around a little bit on the road so i want something that will hold up for a while. Thanks to whoever can give some info. or opinions. :talon:

You do not have to pull the engine on an awd. However you have to deal with the transfer and a heavy mother of a trans. Get a good clutch and while you are at it, get an aluminum flywheel. You will like the faster response. Make sure it's for an awd. You don't want to use a fwd flywheel. Several vendors here sell them and sometimes you can find a good deal in the classifieds.

Good Luck

with a lightened flywheel my car would almost stall if you were revving it or driving it at high RPM's and then clutched it. the RPM would fall real fast and the ISC had trouble catching it at times. Plus the car needed a higher RPM to launch.

this on an AWD.

I recently bought the Xact Flywheel for my 1990 TSI Fwd and its great! Its the ACT2600hd my first time replacing the clutch in this car and so far all is great!

i would get an act 2100 clutch kit. if you're not into racing it'll last you forever if you drive it smooth like a daily driver. and if you need to, you can beat down on it [respectfully].

I've used Exedy for years, and IMHO i'd recommend the Exedy stage 2 Cerametallic clutch ($379 shipped from Logic performance) . It is up to PAR with the 2100 and is much more forgiving on your leg. I've had an ACT2600 and my left calf was bigger than the other by a 1/2 inch by the end of the year.
for street use go Exedy all the way, but if your car see's track action go ACT :thumb:

I'm going with a spec stage 3 and a fidanza. Going to be replacing it in about 2 weeks when i get home from school.

I have a fidanza flywheel and a act2600 in my current dsm...

i had a stock resurfaced flywheel and a act2600 in my last dsm..

act2600 is a awesome clutch, I would never get anything else..

I've seen alot of other clutchs and I really don't like alot of them...

we have seen a few shitty ones such as (SPEC) go through the shop and they look like SHIT alot of there bolts on the pressure plate dont even line up correctly, its retarded.

bottem line DONT GET SPEC, they suck horribly!

I've never read anything bad about spec. I'll write up how it is after I get it installed.

Want mine? I put in a Spec Stage 3 a few months ago and I don't like it. The engagement is either too harsh, or it won't fully grab. It's fine for regular street driving, but when it's time to GO! I have no idea if it'll grab or slip.
