starter or crankwalk?

Ok here's the problem. If I do not have the clutch in and I try to start the car the starter will turn the flywheel and disengage, sometimes it cranks two to three times before disengaging. But if I do have the clutch in it starts right up every time. To me and from what I know about crank walk could this not be caused by excess crank shaft play? I don't have the tick from the CAS and no other symptoms are to be found. So could this be crank walk or just a bad starter?

Either but do this: Check your FWD for crankwalk

You don't need to have the CAS tick of death for the motor to have CW. Such as my case from what I found out last week. My end play measured a 0.27, with a 0.25 service limit (that's metric, btw). Just a hair out.

Like mentioned by luv2rallye, check you crank end play.

When my Spyder crankwalked, I was able to start it right up every time with no clutch...And then suddenly one day when I was driving I heared TICK TICK TICK TICK TICK TICK TICK...No warning, no nothing. Just decided to go for a walk and not tell me.

If it had walked enough for the starter to not engage you would have surely broke the crank sensor. I'm betting on not a symptom of crankwalk.

I agree. Starter is more likely the problem.

Starter solinoids are known to "drag" when disengageing. I have had Numerous! starters do this to me.
Its caused by age and heat.

Replace that starter.
Have the new one Tested at the store! before you walk out with it.

My camero used to eat starters on a monthly basis, from heat generated by the manifolds..
One day I went through 3 starters before actually getting one that worked correctly. Talk about a biotch changing a starter in the dark, in a apartment complex parking lot, with NO jacks 3 times!

it was the state and it had .0067 end play thats almost two hundred thousand miles. i feel better, thanks
