I have a 90 talon awd. brand new starter and battery, the transmission is out so I can see the starter extending but does not crank the flywheel... took off the flywheel so there is nothing but the starter, tried to start it but it only extends and does not spin... any ideas

Make sure the big terminal on the starter has battery voltage to it.
Many times the wire gets left off the battery terminal.

If it's got power, it's time for a new starter.

It does have a new starter, tested and spun on the machine, there is electricity because it does extend. It just wont spin on the car, on the machine to test it, it passes fine.

Id take the starter back to wherever you got it and tell them its defective. If nothing else they can either test it for you or give you another one. It will at least eliminate the starter as being the problem.

you were using an external power supply or the tranny was still in the car and hooked up properly?
sounds like the selonoid isnt working or not powered, the one that puts power to the motor
after it extends all the way,
does it look like the gear comes out all the way?
