Rims and tires

i have a 96 talon I'm wanting to put 17" rims on. It is lowered 1.5". What I'm wondering is what offset I need an what tire size. I don't want any rubbing.

I run 17x9 +35 on my 95 awd talon with 245/40/17 I'm a bit lower and I have no problems with rubbing

If you didn't know, 2gs can have more offset then 1gs

How much of an offset. What about an 18" rim tire setup. Is that to much?

I wouldn't do 18 inches, can harm your drivetrain,and your speed will be off. I'll do 17 inches for less rotational mass.

35mm will be the max anything over will require fender rolling.

18s will not harm drivetrain unless you are AWD running different diameters but you are right that 18s can rub depending on width of the wheel. Just an example, I was running 18x8.75 +33 offset with 235/40 tires and I needed fender rolling. 17x8 IMO is the best wheel size for the 2g and provides enough tire width for 90% of DSMers.

You must have some amazing roads and must be driving like a grandma then because this setup for sure requires fender rolling. Just go find some uneven roads and dips/slopes.

I don't track my car but I also don't drive like a grandma and the roads here aren't the best I also didn't roll the fenders although I was prepared to. I'm sure if I was slammed it would be a different story. I searched quite a bit before I bought my rims and found multiple people running my combo with good success.

Just for some referance, the pic below is my 245/40/17 tire. A little tall but still looks good IMO. (Excuse the dirty car)

OP: Have you looked into some evo rims?

Yeah my bad, I always assume DSMs are slammed for some reason. With enough height you can get away with it.

It's all good, I have a probably a little more fender gap up front than you do and the back has a little more than the front. Suspension is a bit stiff so that helps too. I think the 40 series tire looks good though.

I have 215/50s on 17x8 with 35 offset. I found that I would get occasional rub with wider tires. I'm not a fan of low profile tires. However because I always have a ton of tools and a jack in my trunk I swapped to awd struts (on a fwd) since they're about 12mm higher. This is with ST awd springs.
