Is this the right dipstick? I flushed my tranny completely myself the other day adding 6.4 quarts. It drove fine the night right after the flush but the dipstick always read low or dry. So, thinking I might have pumped too much fluid out, I bought another quart and added half of it. Now my transmission isn't engaging at running temp. and slipping really bad. I'm going to drain about half a quart and see what happens. I just want to know if this is the right dipstick or is it really just that much of a pain in the *** to read.

and yes i flushed correctly. Drain 4 quarts out of the pan then refill 4 quarts then pump out 2.4 quarts and add 2.4 quarts while it's pumping out. Right?

  1. What was the dipstick reading before the flush?
  2. How well was it operating before the flush?
  3. Did you use the right fluid? For sure?
  4. After the flush you said it "worked fine"... Did you "flog it" a few times or just drive conservatively? (This is how I messed mine up - now it sliiiiiiiiides into third)
  5. What is the dipstick reading now?
  6. Have you noticed any odd burning clutch smells while driving since the flush?
  7. Did you pull the pan and replace the filter? when was the last time anyone did?

Also- somewhere I read that "if you can still hold onto the dipstick without it burning your hand, it is not up to operating temperature".

1 never really got a good read
2 before the flush I put in Lucas stop slip which ruined everything. I flushed and it drove just as it did before the Lucas (A LOT better.)
3 not for sure but I used oreilys global atf which covers diamond at+3 which is why I used it.
4 right after I flushed it I test drove it around the neighborhood and down the highway without any problems
5 the dipstick reads dry after I drained out that half quart that started messing things up again. So I ordered an OEM dipstick because I don't know where the heck my fluid level is right now.
6 I don't notice odd smells but sometimes while changing from P to R, N or D I hear whining noises :(
7 I did pull the pan to replace the filter but the new filter requires shorter bolts so I could not replace it this time. So old filter stayed on.

And yeah I'm going to start letting it warm up for longer periods of time before I try to check again.

Thanks for the reply

The crappy part about "operating tempurature" is if you don't have enough fluid in it while getting there you can cause damage. Too much fluid = bad, not enough fluid = really bad.

Where there any magnets in the pan? Mine had two in the pan and one on the other drain plug. they where over loaded with powdered filings. After much searching I found several posts/blogs/etc that said this is normal if the pan had not been dropped and cleaned for too long.

Also when you check the dipstick use clean paper towels and really take a minute to completely dry it off. Under plenty of light it will sparkle where it is reading.

Your trans needs an unrestricted supply of fluid. After "flushing" you may have disturbed some muck at the bottom of the drain pan, restricting the filter. Get the right bolts and change it.

There were no magnets in the pan unfortunately and I was wondering what that other plug was when I was down there. I wonder why there are 2 plugs? Anyway, I think I'm going to re-add that half quart that I lastly drained because I guess I'd rather be a little overfilled than under. Then going to wait about 15 mins to warm up and check it with the new dipstick. I just hope I haven't already toasted anything in there; it's the whining noises that scare me. :/

Thanks a lot for all the advice/help!
