Hello all. I am helping a friend with his car. He has a 1999 2.4L SOHC Eclipse. His car "died" so me and another friend went to take a look. We hooked up an OBDII scanner and we got p0340 camshaft position sensor. I researched on this site first and found that some people replaced the sensor and were fine. Some people replaced the sensor and found that the harness/wiring was the problem.

We first replaced the sensor and still no go. The car cranks fine and sounds like it will start but no start. I then inspected the wires and looked for anything melted. All seemed fine. I then did some basics and tested for fuel/spark. I could hear the fuel pump prime so I didn't think that was the problem. I tested one of the spark plugs and didn't get any spark. The plugs were covered in oil and looked extremely old and fouled. I replaced them. Tried to crank the car, no start. Pulled the plugs and they were covered in oil. Not good.

So now im kind of stuck. I dont have a voltmeter as of yet so i wasnt able to test the sensor and harness. Anything else that could be causing this code to keep coming up? What about the oil on the plugs? I looked down into the cylinders and the pistons were caked in oil. looked pretty bad.

Opinions/suggestions?

rings are bad which is why your cakes with oil... the sensor i cant help you with.. i had the similar problem but i replaced the sensor and all was good.. i would check the head as well you might possably have a warped head which is causing it to spit the code on the sensor and leak oil

Yea i was thinking the rings were bad. The motor looks to be in bad shape. The bottom was CAKED in oil and the oil level was low. Checking the head means taking it to a machine shop though. I wonder how it ran before it died on him. I still dont know any details other than "it died." He probably overheated at one point

I tested with a good spark plug before i went out and bought plugs. It sparked. So the coils/wires and PTU are probably good.

well we took off the timing cover and the crank gear sheared off the timing belt teeth so the bottom end was spinning without the top end moving hence why we got the p0340 cam sensor code. This also probably means the top end is destroyed i.e. bent valves. looks like we need a new motor

nope negative... not a new motor... but damn home boy you got yourself a project... new rings, and sense ytour down there might as well replace the pisstons that have been freely slaaping the crap out of the valves... what he did i can gaurantee is did a hard launch jusmped time and sold it to you witch means possable overheating problem so you just moght have to get a whole new head... have fun bud LOL. but really have fun cause it will be worth it
