i just finished rebuilding my motor. i did new rings, valves, valve guides, seals, new head gasket, arp studs, comp cams, findanza cam gears. the engine fires right up but after running for about 5 mintues white smoke was comming for the exhaust. it looked like i was fogging for mosquito's. before i put the turbo back on i checked for shaft play and there was none. i am thinking maybe the seals are bad in it but i was looking for a few more things to check. any help would be great thanks

forgot one thing. i installed my safc2 and its saying between 32-37 counts of knock.

SAFC dont read knock for our cars

Are you sure you got the settings on the SAFC correct?

Compression Check? Could be something like valves weren't seated correctly...

How long have you driven the car since the rebuild? could be as simple as chemicals burning off during install like PB Blaster/WD-40, Cleaners, etc...

Get out and seat the rings. And are you absolutely sure the rings are on the right way?

If something happened to the previous motor that could have pushed oil down the exhaust, it might just be left over oil burning out of the cat (if you have one) or exhaust pipe/muffler.

Well First you need to try and determine if the smoke is white blueish color or just plain white. If it has a blueish tint then its OIL burning. If that's the case you may have to give it some time for the rings to seat. Also check the oil return line and make sure its not clogged or kinked.

If the PCV valve is stuck closed the crankcase can build up pressure and cause smoking too.

Did you remove the balance shafts? How high is your oil pressure? If its TOO high it can certainly blow out seals in the turbo and/or engine.

Also remember the first start up will always be a little smokey from all the assembly lube and things burning off.

im going to do a compression check when i get home. i am at work trying to figure out what i need to check. when i first started it, it ran good then i was setting the timing i got it to 5 degrees and smoke started to come out. and it is white smoke not bluish. it has a new oem pcv valve. i havent driven it at all. i finished it yesterday afternoon and started it to set my timing. when i had the head off i took it to 2 local shops to have them check all the valves. they said there where no leaks. i forgot what the test was called that they did.

so hooking the white wire up to the ecu for the knock sensor isnt needed? the knock count was making me a little nervous.

Ok, so did the old motor blow a head gasket or a turbo that could have leaked antifreeze into the exhaust?

Start it up and run it for 20-25 minutes keeping an eye on the temp gauge. If the smoke doesn't clear up by then, you have a problem.

thats what i was thinking about doing i just didnt want the neighbors to get mad. i will do that then do a compression test and go from there.

To hell with the neighbors. :D

Might need to rev it up a little to get the exhaust nice and hot to help burn off whatever is in there.

Make yourself a Pest Control sign with a mosquito on it and tape it to the door. Then drive around the block a few times. Recording that and putting it on here earns rep points!

i would do that if i had a cam. when i got home i couldnt get it to rev past 2000 rpms. it is building boost, i can hear the bov. so i checked my timing it was like a half a tooth off so i am in the middle of fixing that right now
