I am just finishing taking the bugs out of my '90 AWD Talon that hasn't run in 7 years. The rad fans will not come on and therefore the car is overheating badly. :notgood:

Whenever I use a jumper wire accross terminals 2 and 4 of the relay connector, both fans kick in immediately. So I replaced the relay and the fans were working on their own and everything was good. I took the car for a drive and just before I reached my destination, the fans stopped coming on and my car would overheat again. I figure there must be something shorting or grounding and burning up my relay.

I want to just rewire it from the relay to the fans so that as long as my ignition is on, the fans will run. The problem I have is I don't know which terminal the power to from the igniton at the relay connectors. When the ignition is off, I have power at #4 and with the ignition on, I have power at all but #1.

Can someone help me out here? Thanks and sorry for the long post.

The rad fuse, relay, and thermo switch have been replaced btw.

Do both of the fans work? Also, check the electrical connections one the fans themselves, I have seen them melt and short out.

Yes the fans both work and the connections are good. I just think there is a short or ground somewhere in the wiring and so I just want to run new wires.

Running new wires sounds good, but you need to find that short first unless you are running new wires from the relay all the way to the fans.

Good Luck :thumb:

(just had a short myself in my fog lights, wire was frayed and grounding inside the housing).

Yes I'm going to run new wires.

I guess I didn't say it properly in my first thread but what I'm really asking is which terminal of the relay connector is the one that the power comes to from the ignition?

i would check the the sensor on the water kneck. not the single wire for the temp gauge but then two wire for the computer side of things. it def sound like a short your pulling too much current for the stock wire. rewire with 18 gauge and test at that point. i would check to see how much current your pulling off of them wires. are they geeting really hot and getting real rubbery?..if so that a direct short and could cause a fire.

take a meter and ground one side to the engine and the other side to one of the wires with the ignition on. turn on your ac so your ac compressor fan wants to come on.

Sorry but the coolant temp. sensor has nothing to do with this...

Problem solved. I just grounded the wire going from the relay to the thermo switch. Now the fan runs all the time, but only if the ignition is on.
