I will send my transmission to them this summer, my transmission is in good conditions up to date, what they do to my stock parts? do they keep them? or the send them back to me as spare ones?

Another question is how much hp can stage 2 hold and for how long? in not a far future i will want to run consecutive 11secs runs how oftem do shep trans break?

Well first off yes, you can call or email him. The parts that get replaced are thrown away. Synchros are not worth saving due to the price along with seals and bearings. In a stage 2 you will get a new 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear. Second is almost always junk and not worth saving, that includes the 1/2 hub and sleeve too. The 3/4 will be replaced too along with the 3/4 hub and sleeve. Considering he does not sell used parts in his rebuilds these are also tossed in favor or the new 3/4 gearset. If you would like your old used parts back just ask, im sure he would put them aside and send them back, but shipping charges may increase due to the weight
As for a stage two holding up to consistant 11`s i wouldnt chance the center diff. the center diff is one of the more expensive parts in your transmission and can take a lot of abuse through launches. I would recommend looking into a stage 3 with a 4-spider. Not only will it hold up better but also get you more longevity in the long run. Or if your looking to save a couple hundred you could opt for the welded center which will give you a 50/50 power transfer, the assurance that its not gonna break, and i`ll be running it with you :thumb: . Many people complain about the driveability issue with the welded but i think its way overrated. My car will be mainly street driven too. how often do you cut the wheel completely, to even notice it? for me not enough to care.
You also asked about the come back rate of the trans. Well to my knowledge he gets at most a couple of returns a year due to racers doing what they due best and beating the hell out of their car. As long as you know how to drive and run the correct fliud you cant go wrong! Good luck and I think you deffinately made the right choice looking into Shep.

I have had experience with shep...First, i had a stock rebuild done like two and a half years ago...That tranmission took a beating like a champ. The service was awesome then. I just recently sent my transmission up to him again to get more the less a stage four. Again, excellent service. Talked to me about what would get me a really strong transmission and then he built it...I didnt go pick it up yet, but im real excited! Ive been to the shop, its a very clean operation! I highly recommend John!

He has a FWD, the 4 spider or welded center differential wouldnt apply to him, he also only offers a stage 2 for fwd. The parts he switches out are really not reusable because they wear, why would you want them back? Another thing that you can do is get an AWD transmission modiffied to fit a FWD, from what i've heard, they are stonger transmissions.
I had my transmission rebuilt by Shep about a year ago and I have not had a chance to beat on it so I cant really say how much of a beating it can take, but i am hoping for 12's with the new set up i am putting in, hopefully it will hold up fine for a while.

Sorry about the mix up, i didnt realize you had a FWD. Guess ill be running the welded diff by myself.

jrpmp69: What you said of the AWD trans. in the FWD is true. The reason for this is for the 3/4. If you have a heavily modified FWD and plan on revving to the moon an option for the AWD`s is a double synchro 3/4. Also another reason would be the availibility of the AWD trans.. If you ever break your FWD bad enough an AWD can be found cheaper and easyer. Sorry for the AWD/FWD mix up again A.J.

iv recomended a couple of my friends to get shep trannys and honestly, hi work and quality of service cant be beat.
we had a FWD stage 2 with a quaife (sp?) diff in a 2g my buddy used to have, the car was only a low 13 sec set up but the trans was absolutly great. hate to say it but he is abut as tough as you can be on trannys and we never had a single problem with it, beat it on it like it was bulletproof and never had any troubleI(to give an idea of whati mean by hard on trannys, in the trans the shep replaced, he exploded the stock front diff like a grenade and put 6 inch wide hole in the trans case, ruined the clutch, flywheel, everything else inside and the radiator from shrapnel. trans was in perfect condition before it happened, and it wasnt mechanical failure it was driver error i was there LOL). if anything he abused it more once we installed the shep trans, and it held up like a champ untill he parted the car out.

we got another one for his sisters awd, i believe its a stage 4(i went over everything that was done to it piece by piece but dont remember a stage #, it cost considerably more then the stage 2 fwd though). this car has a set up under the hood that should be capable of high 10s with a good driver(although its never been ran cause is not caged to run sub 11s).
we never had any problems with that trans that were related to shep, everything he did to it held up great, untill the car stripped all the teeth off 2nd 3rd and 4th and the drive gear that turns those gears, 80-90% of the teeth were gone on all 4 of those gears(which imo is probally attributed to the cars high power through the giant wheels, cant really blame shep for the mitsu hex cut gears not being strong enough. short of going to straight cut gears or having them sent for cryo treating theres not much you can do about that)

on a side note, my 1g awd has a welded center and she did not want the issues that causes at low speed turns like parking after seeing how my car is in that aspect. shep told them he would do a spot welded diff or sometihjg along those lines that he said would almost be comparable to a welded center on terms or drag performance, but wouldnt have the low speed issues like the full welded does. im not exactly sure what he did or what it was called, but im sure shep would have that info if you talked to him, might be somthing to look into if you buildng a car that your going to drive on the street.

Thanks for all the input. I wrote an email to shep and this was his reply:

If you are willing to pay the shipping we can certainly send your parts
back. For that much power I would highly suggest a new intermediate shaft,
they are $300 extra and Rem polishing which is $200 extra for fwd.

I dont doubt about his services, i am a big fan of him and admire his work. I know this is mechanical and man made at some point is going to break, The idea of having my old trans parts back were if i found another damage transmission maybe with this spare parts (that some of them could be in good conditions) i could build another transmission to have it as a spare one or maybe sell it.
