question about resizing rods

I just picked up a 95 Tsi (automatic) for my wife, but it had a spun (missing) rod bearing on cyl. 1

I got the engine out last night, but I do have a question.

I have talked to a lot of people about this... I am planning to buy a new crank and 4 sets of bearings and 1 new rod. I have been told I need to get the new rod or rods resized. What is involved in this? Is it really necessary? Do I have to take the rod to a machine shop for this, or do they need the whole block? I have no idea what is involved in a "rod resize" to be honest, I didnt even know you had to do it when you replace the crank with a new one. Maybe if you replaced your crank with an old one... Someone please fill me in on this one.

Also, I won't be racing this, if anything it will be more of a DD.

Last question, if the rod still has good clearances around the new crank, do I really need to replace it? (if the surface that meets the bearing is in good shape)

If the big end is within specs it doesn't need resized, you will need to take the connecting rod to a REPUTABLE machine shop so they can check it out. If it does need resized then they will need the rod only. What they do is mill a small amount off of the mating surface of the connecting rod then bolt the cap back on and torque it to the proper specs then they hone out the big end so it is back within specs.
