Hi,

I'm hopefully going to be purchasing a 2G GS-T or GS soon and have a few questions. I'm trying to decide between the two and since this is going to be my daily driver, gas mileage is a pretty big factor. I'm almost all city driving so does anyone know the City MPG for these two cars? I already checked Edmunds.com and Fueleconomy.gov but I just want to double check with the experts. On those sites it listed that they got the exact same City MPG (23) and I thought that it was kind of odd that a Turbo would get the same gas mileage as a non-Turbo. Anyways, I did search and didn't really find exactly what I wanted.

Secondly, I am slightly leaning towards the GS as I have a feeling that it will probably get slighty better gas mileage. Anyways, I would eventually like to get it to run high 13's to low 14's in the 1/4 mile and will probably go about this with some type of turbocharger. Anyways, is it possible to still get good gas mileage with a turbo? I heard that if you stay out of boost that you still can, how would you go about staying out of boost? Is this even true?

Thank you!

I get around 24 mpg in the city with the mods in my profile. I am really not a conservative driver though, I'm sure I could do better if I could stay out of boost.

My friend has a FWD turbo 2g that gets 36mpg on the highway/

Its very possible, its all in how you tune it.

I'm heavily modded with huge injectors and 255 HP fuel pump and I get about 20 miles to the gallon. Gas mileage is the last thing you should be concerned about if your gonna upgrade a car. When you make power, you sacrifice drivability. Plus if you have the money to support the hobby, you should have the money to pay at the pump. You think people who own Cobras or WS6s are really concerned about their fuel economy? They bought a sports car for a reason...

If you go for GS and save on all that gas, then turbocharge it and you will spend all that money saved on the turbocharger--and that will defeat the purpose... it just makes no sense.

Get a GS-T now, stay out of boost and you'll save on gas--and you won't spend money later trying to turbocharge N/T car. With my '90 Turbo Laser, at 15psi, stock, I got 20+mpg in city and about 30 on the highway. Some achieve it, but realistically, shouldn't expect more than 20/30.

I own a 96 GS, and a 92 TSi. The GS gets about 37-40mpg when its about 40% city. TSi gets about 20mpg city. Now my driving is a little bit different from most peoples. I dont hardly go more than 1/4 throttle. And the highway I normally drive about 70. But the GS lacks power, serious power.

If you are planning on running your car low 13's to 14's it's going to take a few hundred into a turbo'd DSM, it's going to take a loooot more to get a GS to run that.

On a lighter note, on your way to getting to 13, you'll most likely learn about tuning and purchase the necessary essentials, and that right there will give you enough knowledge to tune your car to conserve gas mileage.

Programs like DSM Link allow you to have different setups like "Daily" and "Track" and "Street" that you can change on the fly, that along with a boost controller will allow you to have decent control over your MPG.

Just buy the turbo, its not worth it to buy an N/A. If youre really concerned about gas milage then buy a Hyundai Accent as a DD and GST for track purposes.

Okay, thanks. 20 is better than I expected and hopefully I'll tune it right to get even better gas mileage. Anyways, I was just looking around and I really like the look of the 1G Eagle Talons and am now thinking about getting a 1G Eagle Talon tSi AWD. Quick question, would that get the same gas mileage as the GS-T? Worse? Better?

Thanks.

It is 300 or so lbs heavier and has more drivetrain parts...so yes it probably will it might not be very much tho some ofmy friends seem to get really good gas mileage in their AWD's I never have. I've got only 2g's, the ESI gets about 32 miles a gallon and when my TSI AWD was stock it got around 19-22. Max I could get out of a tank on my AWD was 270 miles. I get about 425 to a tank in the ESI.

I have a 91 Eagle Talon TSi AWD and it gets 20 mpg like clockwork whether you drive into boost, or like an old man. If you're on the highway for a long trip, it gets 23 mpg. I have a joe p. mbc and uicp, so it's basically stock (got same numbers stock) the truth is when I'm on the highway in fifth at 80 I'm at 3500 rpm, which is great for passing without downshifting, but not great for mileage. When DSM's were made they were meant to go fast on cheap gas. The final drive on a DSM is 4.929:1 which is ridiculously high, and the AWD has a lot of parts to move which creates drag. These cars are built for acceleration, not fuel economy. If you want fuel economy get some Korean car.
