No Torque

I have a '92 Laser RS Turbo AWD:
When accelarating and under a load the car shakes through 3rd,4th,and 5th gear. Not 1st or 2nd it is smooth then. Only when I accelarate, the car shakes, if I take my foot off the gas the shaking stops. However today while driving on the express way, the car was shaking again, I was in 5th and took my foot off the gas shaking stopped, did this a couple of times accelerating and taking my foot off the gas pedal. Then when I went to accelerate again it was smooth but no horsepower? I exited the freeway, then at the light, had the car in 1st and went to accelerate and it did not have any torque it was as if the clutch was slipping or transmission had gone out. So my question is what could of happened? The car still is driveable idles fine and boosts the same, and gets up to speed after a couple of minutes, it just doesn't throw you back in the seat like it should when accelerating. When this all happened no noises were made no banging or popping it was as if the car lost all of its horsepower and torque in an instant. Any suggestions or comments on what to check for would be great!

Personally, it doesn't sound tranny related.

It sounds more like axle or engine related.

If you break a front axle, or CV, or bearings in an axle, that would give you the vibrations that you are feeling at higher speeds, as well as the front diff would be freewheeling with one broken axle.

More likely, it could be several other things by theirselves or in conjunction with each other. Such as your tune, balance shaft bearing failure, dead piston or bent rod, a dying knock sensor, cam angle sensor, halfshaft damage, wheels out of balance, bearing failure, hub assembly failure, etc.

Why don't you fully inspect your car first before drawing conclusions. Do a complete visual inspection, check the tightness of the bolts, to a compression test, to a boost leak test, and get a good mechanics manual (Chiltons or Mitsubishi).

Casanova - I was not meaning to insult. I gave you multiple possibilities to look at with your vehicle, and gave you advice. If you don't like it, then fix it yourself. I am only trying to help, and I don't think you will get much when you send me insulting e-mails.

Instead, why don't you use spell check and inspect your vehicle before drawing conclusions for us to fix for you.

After consulting with some other people regarding the problems this person is having, they also came up with the same conclusion as you.

I think that you are right after rereading Casanova's first post with the perspective of it being a clutch. What I don't get is the vibrations he is describing under acceleration. I think I was using that part as the main problem, which led me to axle/halfshaft/CV damage.

Could the vibrations be from the clutch disk worn down to the rivets?, or possibly a combination of problems?

How long has this current clutch been in the car? Have there been any symptoms, such as difficulty shifting into gear, or clutch slippage in gear prior to this? Axles clicking when taking turns?

What kind of clutch is currently being used? How many miles? What is the vehicle history of its drivetrain parts? Parts replaced recently?, etc.

i think that you are wrong about the clutch being worn, i dont think that if it were worn it would vibrate in higher gears and not 1st and 2nd, if its worn its going to slip really badly, bad enough where he would know that that is the problem. i would have to assume that the problem is elsewhere i think that you should read what Twicks69 wrote and go from there
