Well the new six bolt motor is ready to go in and since the trans will be easily accessible when I pull the old motor, I thought this would be the opportune time to have the 4 spider center diff mod done since it wasn't done when the trans was rebuilt about 100 miles ago. The problem is that I don't think it would be wise for me to attempt to take it out of the trans myself so I was wondering if anyone locally would be willing to help me get it out or point me in the direction of someone who could? I'd really appreciate it as I don't want to risk f'in up a nice trans because of a 2 spider failure/blowout.

You can take a look at my build thread to get an idea of the task.

numbers 7, 8, and 9 of the table of contents or scroll down to the post.

It is not hard, but it is also something that you can not take lightly. When installing the new diff you will also have to remeasure the distance for the shims to get your particular pre-load. All of this is covered in the manual for a stock transmission but rebuilders normally have another pre-load they like to use. If you decide to do the job, be sure to ask the vendor for his setting.

If you do not feel comfortable with doing the job yourself, it may not be a good idea to let a stranger tear it apart??? It does require some "special tools", new shaft nuts, new roll pin, and c - clip on top of the viscosis coupler. This may be better left to a shop if you lack some of the proper tools. Everyone starts somewhere. :hmm:

Unfortunately this is a bit of an extenuating circumstance. The shop I'm working with for the motor build/install isn't willing to sit on the car waiting for the trans to come back. If I can get the center diff out and take it to TRE he can machine it and turn it around in an hour. If I take the whole trans to TRE the turn around becomes a week and the price more than doubles. Jon at TRE said it's about a ten minute job and I should have no prob doing it myself, but my experience with trans' is almost non-existent. I would really like the piece of mind of a 4 spider in there, so I'm kind of desperate at this point because I don't want to ruin a perfectly good trans.

I understand about the price but you will still need to order the parts that are not reusable (listed above). Along with that you will need a tool to tighten the shaft nuts back down. I used an old clutch dish with a socket and you can find this in the thread as well.

If you believe you need the four spiders then read through those three posts and it will give you an idea. The pre-load should still be checked once you get it back and if that is not in spec you will have to order the correct shim. More tools are needed for this part such as a slide hammer, a miller tool (don't have the part number at the moment) to easily pull out the races, and a race installer. The Pre-load may be fine but better safe than sorry.

TRE may have the parts on hand but if they don't it will probably take you longer to do it yourself. You may be able to pull it off in a few days if you had all of the tools handy but not if it is your first go around.

FWIW it took me months to do mine with the help of a knowledgeable builder. I am in no way saying that it is impossible for you to do, I just want you to have achievable expectations. :thumb:

I absolutely hear you on this and would have no problem taking it to a shop if time wasn't a factor. For a car whose goal is 350awhp it's almost asinine to not put a 4 spider in there. I don't plan on beating on the car but I don't want to have to drive it like it's made of glass either and cars at stock power levels have shattered the stock 2 spider diffs.

I'm also open to suggestions for shops in the local metro Detroit area that would allow me to bring the trans in and have them remove/reinstall the center diff without charging an arm and a leg. Obviously I don't want to take it somewhere that won't do a good job just for the sake of getting it done cheap, but for something that should take 10 min with the proper tools over $500 seems a bit steep IMO.
