ok, me and a buddy of mine who did a new head and timing and all on his 1g decided to help me install a new head and cam gears and everything else involved in timing, well everything is good except we cant get the timing lined up right, the gears wont match up perfectly with the crank, and when i go to start it, the car runs real rough, and the rpms go crazy, jump up and down all over the place. the one thing we cant seem to figure out is on the cams, are the dial pins supposed to be facing both up, or one up and one down? can someone please help us, we have been workin on the timing for 2 days now, and i need my baby back

the reason i asked that is becuz if you look at the stock cam gears, if both of them are facing up, only one of the gears will have a mark on it, but if you have one up and one down, both will have a mark, only one side of the gear has a mark, so why is it that one is up and one is down to have the marks lined up?

nope, one side of the cam gears say 2.0L, the other side says 2.4L, the 2.4L has marks on both sides of each gear, but the 2.0L only has marks on one side, and like i said, to line them up on the 2.0L side, one is up, and one is down, but even still, we cant get the timing lined up right, with the aftermarket or stock cam gears, its driving us insane

Ok dude, check the grooves, line em up.
the dowel pins facing 12 o'clock pm, while the groves facing eachother.
You may have to retard the cam gear to get the crank to line up.
if this doesn't fix it, then you got some different motor in your car.

ttyl!

i bought the same head, cuz we went by the code on it, 4667867j i think, and we have been tryin for the last 1.5 hours and still cant get it lined up right, we tried having both pins on the cams facing up, and it wouldnt start, so now we tried with the intake down, and the exhaust up, but we cant get the marks lined up, can anyone help us

oil pump runs by itself inside the oil pan, so i only have cams and crank to line up, i think i bent the valves cuz it would even start today. only crank, and start and die right away, wouldnt even make it to 500 rpms, if that

dont got a compression checker, so i dunno, id rather just send my head to exileracing and have them port and polish and do a 3 angle valve job for 300 dollars, thats 160 less than i paid for a new stock head, i already have my old head off anyways, so i might as well do that, i just hope cylinder heads int'l will take it back even tho its been on the car , the guy said he would rather send me a new head, but im sure i could con him into taking it back and givin me a refund, blame it all on them, head was defective from the start, and missing a bearing cap bolt, yeah, thats what ill tell them ;)
