How much is it to convert to HID on my 1g?

the cheap way to do it, would be to get some H4 Conversion housings, and get a Dual Beam HID Setup, unless you don't care about your high beams, which is kinda costly. Next would be to convert to a 1gb, do a Projector retrofit and slap some real D2S HID's in them puppies.

Don't know how that is compare to: light housing, hid kit etc.

I'd love to get a set of those, 4G63. I have to wonder though... would you still be able to retain popup functionality, or have to leave them up all the time. :b Plus, they'd be cop-magnets out here in CA, even if they're a proper HID retrofit.

Incorrect. Check the bottom of the page. Their 'street legal' claims are for the Sylvania products they carry (ie: sealed-beam Silverstars). Those HID retrofits are Philips units, and the disclaimer specifically says that they are not DOT approved/legal.
Also, unfortunately, there's a law on the books in California that can be interpreted by the legal system to mean (in essence) that it is illegal to mount brighter-than-OEM lighting systems on any motor vehicle. Originally was meant to kill off those cheapass Honda-kid 'hid' bulbs, as they're a menace to oncoming traffic during nighttime driving (they bloody HURT, even if you're looking away), but a number of areas are doing the typical overzealous cop power-grab thing and interpreting it to include full proper HID retrofits.
The 2Gs can (generally) get away with retrofitting HID into the stock or aftermarket housings.. us popup guys don't have a snowball's chance in hell of claiming that it's a stock option. If we even get caught with the H4 conversion kit out here (and the cop notices/knows what it is), it's a fix-it ticket at the very minimum.

yes, you should be able to keep your pop up ability... For the price tag, its only worth it if you want it enough.

I hardly doubt anything you find for non stock headlights is going to be DOT Approved. But you also shouldn't have to worry about it being legal or not, who is going to care? I have 6000k HID's inside my stock 9006 headlight... thats as illigal as it can get, but its not like your dealing coke, or even driving with illigal drugs in your vehicle. It is only illigal to who cares to pull you over. If you have Projectors, I hardly doubt you'll EVER get pulled over, because the glare wont be in the eyes of the oncomming drivers, it will be on the ground where it belongs. I have never been pulled over for all the illigal stuff on my car, mainly my headlights.

Infinite, your headlights still look reasonably stock. They aren't little round projectors in a housing clearly designed for 6.5"x4" sealed beams. :b The front cover looks like it would arch forward too far to clear the shinethroughs... might have to trim that plastic, if I end up going that way. You're also in New Mexico... SoCal is becoming copnazi central, with the major cities' mayors 'cracking down' on 'street racers'. Which is to say any modified car.
Already have the PIAA driving lights (about 1"x3"), and IIRC I sprung for the Silverstars when I replaced them last. But even with my current setup, it's easy to out-drive your lights when you enjoy twisty canyon roads at night. I've followed someone with HIDs, and I could see everything. It'd be worth it to blow $600, to get that kind of visibility.
