For dry and hard leather I learned something from this old cowboy that lived next door. He was cleaning his tack and I asked him if there was anything I could do for my dry and very hard ski gloves. He whipped out a can of WD40, sprayed the hell out of the gloves rubbed them together and after a few minutes they were soft as new.

Go figure.LOL

Lexol products are good stuff for something easy off the shelf.

I have saddles that are 50 + years old that are soft as a baby's cheek. Restoring old saddles & bridles used to be one of my specialities back at the track (horse racing track). Castile soap or a half cup or so of Murphy's oil soap in warm water and a damp (not wet!) sponge to clean followed by working in some Neatsfoot oil, not too much, in several layers letting it soak in in-between applications works miracles. Take your time, wipe off excess in between. Cleaning once a month or so with the Murphys and hitting with the Neatsfoot will keep it soft as can be. Did this daily for saddles at the track, but of course they were used daily and got full of dirt, horse sweat, horse spit etc. WTF

Yes WD-40 Will soften or restore old leather. It is also useful for cleaning leather. This isn't common knowledge? WD-40 literally does everything, If don't own a can or two, slap yourself and then go buy some.

Its a penetrating catalyst lubricant. It can be used to lubricate, prevent rust, or clean damn near anything you don't mind being oily. I've used it to remove grease stains from clothing as well. Just a squirt, then through the clothes directly in the washer with a good grease soap.

I would recommend regular care with a leather conditioner after you work the wd-40 into the old leather and wipe any excess off. Use a blue shop towel or other lint free cloth.
