For my new project car id like to go with black leather instead of the grey. Going to an apolster is to costly for me so I was womdering if anyone has ever painted or dyed tan leather seats to black. If it is possible could somone give me a how to or if there is a good site or thread I missed to help me with this project. Materials needed and the best to use would be very helpfull thank you.

I would say your best bet would be to find as many actual black interior pieces as you can out of a 99 Eclipse and dye as few pieces as possible. In the body shop I work at they use PPG interior dyes when needed. They hold up very well and don't show the original color with minor scratches.

You can get the rear seat in black from a 99 Eclipse. BUT if you really wanted to dye the rear seat it might be ok because most don't get used much due to how small they are.

I used a black dye on tan seats. 3 coats and it looks really nice. A bit too glossy but i havent buffed it out yet. After that im sure the gloss will fade a bit.

Fiebling's leather dye. Believe i got it on Ebay. Its been awhile but i did alot of reading and found a very good consensus on the quality of Fiebling's. Google the process and prep. Its very important you get that leather absolutely clean before dying.

Just find a 3g eclipse back leather seats. They bolt directly in..

^^^ Noooo shit? I didnt know the fronts were a bolt in deal. They arent too wide or anything? I have some brutally uncomfortable ebay seats that sit too high in mine now. My donor gsx 95 has decent seats but hell, used 3g seats might still be cheaper than reupholstery. Both my 97 seats and the 95s are ripped.

The 3g front seats do not bolt in, it requires custom brackets. The 3g back seats do fit.

^^That makes sense. Doh. Thanks. Atleast no one ever rips the rear seats. Mine at 200k looked new, after dying they look even better.

I think it's cause you put back leather seats. I even read it as black the first couple times so they assumed it was black fronts. Pretty good info though, had no idea.


To the OP if your front seats are in good condition this makes me sad. I've been trying to find a good drivers tan seat for much too long

I simply misread. Happens to us at times, no need to rip on me. I too agree in a general code of conduct on the site and members should have a level of discourse in talking to one another that shows some respect.
I get it, at times people can be hard headed or trolls, thats a different story. I just rather say nothing than put someone down. Im trying, at least.
