I'm having my tranny rebuilt. I have someone pulling it for me. How hard will it be to install it? I can turn a wrench so it's not like I've never done work to the car before but I'm not sure if I should install the thing looking at the Chilton's manual or have someone else do it.

Any advice would be awesome!

That is a hard question to answer. It depends on how good you are. If you are asking this question, you may want to have it done for you. If you have a lift you can use, or something like that, the install will be better. Otherwise, I do not think it is that bad. I helped my buddy pull his RS motor and trans 3 times in one day, and it was not very hard for us.

imo, you should have pulled it yourself and went over everything you taken off. it would have been easier for you to identify whats going where when reassembling everything.Even so you should have no problem getting it back together, it just might take you a lil longer since you have to use a manual.

It entirely depends upon your mechanical inclination. Have you wrenched before? If you have done some moderately involved mechanic work then I'd say go for it, but if all you can do is change a tire and your spark plugs you better leave it for someone else. I'd for sure help/watch the person taking it out and if you do decide to put it back in yourself, you should see if a friend can help.

Thanks for the help guys, my father has a nice lift that he uses for tranny's. I'm thinking about just having it towed to his house since he has all the lifts and do it myself with my dad.

agree- IMO the easiest way to get it back in is to remove the hood and use a hoist/cherry picker to hang the tranny from a chain. I struggled with a floor jack for hours trying to get it to line up, when I connected a chain to it I was able to slip it on within minutes.

+1 on lifting a heavy tranny!

it's regod damn ridiculous when you only use jack stands for the car and lift this bi*** when you're laying down... OMG it sucks LOL

done it 3 times, with a buddy it takes 3 hours to pull it, and we're taking out time. 3:30 to put it back in. But i have no air tools, and only jack stands... so i do it the hard way LOL.

It's not really hard just time consuming

you can fit the tranny in with the motor still there?

I think he meant he lowers it to the floor with a cherry picker and chain, not pull it out the top.

I lower mine with the jack, but I find I have more control when I just get under it and bench press it. Once its up where it needs to be and I have a friend start a bolt I get out from under it and put a jack down, but its just so hard to manuver the tranny so the holes line up when its on a jack IMO.

Thats the way to do just man handle it, I don't know about you 2g gies but a 1 g tranny can be pulled in a hour on jack stands, power tools, and the rest all man power, putting it bck in might take a little longer. And I wouldnt just go by that Chilton you got it might be leaving a step out, it does for a 1g manual.

A lift will definately make it easier specially for your first time. Good luck!

I bench press mine, but I am also a bigger guy, and I just need a buddy to spot me when I am getting it in... Its really not that hard, but just be careful, because that tranny is very heavy.. it helps to get underneath it, and have a pal spot you from the top to guide it in... once you do it a few times, its not bad.. its just worse on the AWD because you have to remove the transfer case as well.. and that thing is super heavy for its size...

if you can turn a wrench, and have a little common sense, then you should be alright..

hahahah i remember pulling the xfer case one... my friend was doing that part while i did something else. he didn't realize just how heavy it was and smacked him in the head almost full force. he's ok however i was just waiting for the blood to start flowing but it never did.

haha... I was working on it and dropped it on my hand.. Split my finger open like stepping on a grape.. I could not believe how heavy that was..

I've never taken my tranny out until I destroyed 4th gear, did it myself with a jack, not hard at all. If you have a tranny jack, it should be a lot easier. my tranny is at jacks getting a fresh rebuilt, a new 4th, and an lsd. you should be fine.:thumb:

Just remember to read a manual and/or the vfaqs a couple times before doing it. It is a relatively "easy" job, but there's about 100 things you can screw up of you aren't careful. Have someone help you. It's much better as a 2 man job (at least the part of lifting the trans and putting it in place). When I put mine in I wrapped straps around the trans and had my buddy help lift from above while I maneuvered underneath the transmission. Make sure you have ALL the right bolts and that you put them in the right place. Be sure you don't lose the dowel pins that go between the engine & trans. Missing pins or bolts will cause the trans to push away from the engine or cause it to swivel. This will destroy your clutch and probably other things. Check all your clutch components. Make sure the disc is still good, and that the p.plate and flywheel aren't warped. Look for signs that you need to replace them. Replace your clutch fork and ball!!! Properly torque all the bolts, and be sure to tighten them in the right order on the flywheel, clutch, and p.plate. When putting the trans in, don't let the trans put any weight on the input shaft once its in the clutch. Have someone help you so they can put in a couple bolts before you let go of the trans. Don't let the trans hang by one bolt, you can crack the bell housing. Read up on properly bleeding the clutch hydraulics. And ABOVE ALL ELSE, be absolutely 100% sure you are getting proper clutch disengagement before you drive the car. You can screw your brand new expensive synchros if your clutch is dragging.

Good luck! :thumb:

Should be easy frist big repair i ever did was changing my clutch me and me dad did it by ourself ont he ground, one tip if u have good rafters and a good chain fall this is very very i repaet very useful forr removing your tranny, and yes this is an acceptable thing to do trust me ive checked im goign tos chool for mech/enginnering

I'm pulling my tranny myself this summer. My garage has a steel beam in it and I'll just park the car under that. I'll use a jack to get it up and then run the chain down to it. Then I'll remove the jack and manuever it with the hoist and man power. Hopefully that works well.

I pulled my auto tranny from my 91 laser, I had it all unbolted ,but soon relized it didn,t want to let go ,the stupid thing had welded it self to the crank ,so here is a heads up if you have this problem ,LOL,good luck.

i have done sevral clutch and tranny jobs on different cars, none of them comapred to my first 95 talon awd though. i did it by myself without a lift in a driveway. too me a week first clutch, 1 day second clutch. alot of suff in the way. try not to have extra bolt......baaaad me.

Go for it, just remember to bag and tag everything and label as needed. That is how I learned, just dove right in. It was rough for sure, but I learned more than I ever could have any other way.

just like he sai. dive in and get dirty. tag and bag is a great way to get it back togathercorrectly. a digial camera helps alot. be carful reinstaling though. i damaged my input shaft bearing when my friend let go and let the tranny hang on the shaft. good luck

Dead one, thats hardest part, oo and couple tips never let tranny just rest on the clutch always support it when you are lining it up or taking it out with something. also have some kind of heavy duty roller bed that can fit under your car it make sure your car is high enough( front or side) to slide your tranny out this will save your back and the bottom of your tranny from scratches. but thats just what i did
