A few nights ago... I had just got off at work went home and was running sea foam through my pcv line, ... after about 20 minutes or so went up to my garage only to find a huge cloud of smoke and my car not running; the hose going to the overflow on my 92tsi had blown off, my timing belt cover had melted, along with mt spark plug cover;
nothing i found had been visibly burnt, the smoke was white, my plug wires shattered when i was able to get them off, i had some hope for a bit though when i had managed to remove all the melted plastic from my cams, pulleys, belts, etc. ... i pulled my plugs, [changed my oil and coolant [neither had been mixed together]] went manually turnengine as if to get it to TDC and was stoked when it wasn't seized everything turned in sync good signs right so i called in to work rushed out and bought new plugs, wires, and all that but when i got it all back together and tried to turn her over all hope was quickly lost when the crank pulley was turning and the cams didn't budge... :mad: The timing belt seemed way too tight and honestly i was was borderline between kicking the sh*t out of my tsi and/or having a compete mental breakdown... needless to say i haven't touched her since and am pretty bummed!! :cry: Now what do i do :talon: j

I'm guessing you overheated, blew the HG causing the overflow hose to pop off sin you had all that pressure in the cooling system. Have you taken off the valve cover to see if you popped any rockers off? You could also see if your cams somehow seized. Let us know what you find.

yes i wanted to use a vacuum line that would directly feed all cylinders. as for my head gasket i figured it had to be toast as well but when i changed my oil there wasn't any water in it , same goes for The coolant. But my oil was defiantly burnt pretty bad i still can smell it inside my house ( kinda smells like burnt popcorn) and its been over a week. i just took my valve cover off and I'm not sure what exactly I'm looking for. if you literally mean popped off then no they're still on. and how can i tell if my cams are seized thanx! :talon: J

i would start taking off timing covers and inspecting the belt and timing assembly. whens the last time you had a timing belt done, and if you had one done recently did you change out idle pulleys,oil pump,seals etc etc. if your crank turns and the cams dont that points towards that general area. what could of happened is your oil pump went out causing the cams to sieze in the head and the crank might have ate the teeth off of the bottom of the timing belt. this would cause the crank to turn but the cams not to move. since you have the valve cover off remove a few of the bearing caps and inspect them for damage also take a look at the cams them self. take off the timing belt check your idle pulleys to see if they spin freely if you feel some roughness in them as they spin then the bearings in them are bad. also depending if you got lucky or not with the cams not turning and the crank spinning freely valves will be bent and piston heads will be damaged. in my opinion it sounds like the oil pump went causing a chain reaction of breakage. good luck and keep us posted

I would suggest pulling the timing belt off (you will want to replace it if the cover melted onto it anyway) and try to turn the cams over individually. Take a 17MM wrench or socket and turn it clock wise. If the bottom of the belt got stripped, the engine would be out of time and a nasty racket would ensue, i.e. broken/bent valves. Since 4G63's don't have actual cam bearings, just caps, if the cams did seize theres a good chance that head could be junk depending on the extent of the damage. But like I said, start with the obvious, you cams aren't turning with the engine, turn them yourself and keep us updated.

just got timing belts off and i am able to turn the cams. i didnt try to move it very far though (timing belt being off and all). What would be the best route to go from here?

check to see if the oil pump sprocket and idler and water pump move easily. but don't spin the oil pump out of time

then compression test to make sure you didn't slightly hydrolock the motor you did pinch the hose a bit and not just let it all flow in really quick when doing the seafoam thing, fyi hog wash injector cleaner works better when used that way than sea foam.

still getting spark, how about fuel, that would be helpful to

radiator fan coming on at all. that could have failed or the switch for it and you never knew because you don't have many stop lights, you definitely have a cooling issue that caused the stuff to melt
