Wow, I just wrote a huge detailed post only to have it deleted when trying to submit it. This truly is a dsm site! :D

Well instead of filling you in with all the details Ill just write the short version instead.

As I was replacing my speedo cable I had to remove my battery to complete the installation. My uncle accidently swapped the direction of the battery in to box, so when I was trying to hook it back up it took my several large arks to realize that I was attempting to hook up the negative terminals to the positive cables and vice versa. :notgood:

No problem I thought as I began putting everything away. However, as soon as I turned the ignition I knew I was in trouble. :|

My car is now throwing a code 44, which is ignition related. The car has a low 450rpm idle and a very rough and sluggish throttle response. Me being a rook at anything automotive I was wondering if I could get any information on the ignition system. Where would be some places to start troubleshooting? Could the battery arking have made a difference? Also I felt something on the firewall, near the windshield wiper motor fall, but after looking found nothing so I didnt thing anything more of it. Any info is welcomed. Thanks a lot!

CEL 44 is a coil and/or power transistor. You could try swapping in another coil pack from a friend and see if that fixes it. I am also willing to bet you blew the alternator fuse. It's an 80amp fuse and has 2 bolts on the side that you must remove to pull it out.

Code 44 for the 1G has to do with Ignition coil, ignition power transisitor unit

Here is what the shop manual has to say on that:

1. Engine cranks, but does not start.
(1) Spark is insufficient or does not occur at all (on spark plug)
- Check ignition coil.
- Check crank angle sensor.
- Check power transistor.
- Check spark plugs
(2) Spark is good.
Check ignition timing.

2. Engine idles roughly or stalls
- Check spark plugs
- Check ignition timing
- Check ignition coil

Alright thanks a lot, I was thinking it might be the coil. Would the arking the battery cause this to go bad? The fuse sounds like something Ill look into as well. Also could I have knocked any wires or something off the firewall that would effect the ignition?
