I'm doing a budget build up on my 1G cylinder head. I'm ordering the DKS 3 cams with springs and retainers from FFWD Connection. The stock valves will more than likely be reused. The head has already been blasted and inspected and is good to go.

My budget does not allow for porting so I was wondering just how much HP I'll actually be losing by going this route. I am however getting a valve job done. And I'm very capable of gasket matching the head myself, as well as polishing the exhaust ports and combustion chambers.

I have spoken to lots of people reguarding this issue and most people say that a head that gets good machine work can flow 20% more air. With me getting the valve job, my own gasket matching, and my own polishing of the chambers and exhaust ports, I should be ok.

The car will have a SBR G60 turbo and will reuse the stock intake manifold after it gets cleaned up as well. Also the car will have a direct port nitrous kit jetted for a 100 shot. What do you guys think?

A stock 1G head with cleaned up ports should be just fine with your setup. You're not going to lose HP by not porting the head out fully. I wouldn' t lose any sleep over it.

There are alot of "tricks" to porting heads. If you look into SBC stuff ( same concept), there is differnt ways to port to get different results say for if you want top end, or low end torque, ect. And keep in mind it is VERY EASY to port to far or wrong and LOSE HP!!

100 shot OMG ... start with a 50 shot and go from there my friend, 100 is alot of nitrous

He is talking about a direct port kit. The lowest you can go with a direct port kit is 100 shot.

But 90laser is right. 100shot is ALOT harder on a boosted car then a NA. You will be suprised. I started with a single fogger then went to the DP.

Most of the flow gained from head work is with a good radius valve job and cleaning up all the casting around the bowl area and at the valve seat area. There is casting flash you can clean up in all the ports buy just using some sanding rolls and a die grinder just to smooth everything out is all you really need to do. With all the valves out stick you finger in each of the valve holes and you will see what I mean.
The intake port is huge and flows very well with just a clean up. The exhaust port is were the 'expert' work should be done since its tiny compared to the intake.
The turbo boost is were the power in these motors are made not the head work thats done to it.
Example the same 2 set up cars one with a 2500$ race head and one with a stock head.
the one with the race head is running 22 psi and the stock headed car is at 35 psi.
This will be no contest. The stock headed car will blow the doors off the car with the race head at 22psi.
Im not saying just use a stock head. Its just that not alot of porting work needs to be done. A good sealing head is what your looking for.

If you take out the valves you can see the ridges that are right before the valve seats. Just rub your finger in below the valve seat (about 1/2" in and you'll feel the lip) that's the part of casting you want to make smooth. It's really simple!

its a little closer than a 1/2" and its called blending the seats :thumb:
