We couldn't damn believe it. It was so goddamned beautiful, and at the time with its "mere" 150hp it never held anybody up. The only holdups were at the Datsun dealers where they were getting whatever they wanted to charge for them.
As time went on, and they got into the hands of the unclean, it became only more apparent just what a good design it was. The L-series motors were one of the first SOHC designs to not have cam troubles (such as the Pinto engine did), and the bottom-ends were built like ship guts.
It was quite a day. Of course, the smog liars took the fun out of it, and before fuel injection overtook everything, we had stumblers like the squaretop SU-Hitachis. And, like so many of the attractive in America, it soon got fat.
But those early days....
.....and they beat 911's on the race track. these cars have soooo much potential. There is a black supercharged LS-1 one floating around on the internet and some vids too. Don't have time right now to look it up though. SWEET RIDE!!!
, i don't remember the L28, but i worked on a couple of them in okinawa, the japanese love those motors. seeing those things running individually carb'd was awesome, and they sounded so mean.
