is it safe to tune with a temp gaudge? i am new to dsms and that is how i haved tuned according to exhaust temp

Not really, the prefered method is with a wideband.

You can use it as a reference, its not that accurate of a way but it will give you a better idea than without anything at all.

An egt is helpful so you don't melt stuff down and is a good guide for getting some basic settings however you can still damage internals even with ideal EGT's. You must have a datalogger of some kind so you can see what is going on with the motor at all levels. I have run stock 02 for the last 18 years and have never had a problem tuning once learned how. Then when I started with my project talon windows 95 was just released so there were not a lot of options then. Later, I never wanted to spend the extra cash on a wideband because I never used one before but I know a lot of people that swear by them. I tune by how my plugs look mainly and by knock from the knock sensor. Yes PK can screw that up but that is what a socketed ECU is for. Once you get over learning to tune you will be able to feel how your ride runs and will know immediately when something isn't right especially when you mod the hell out of it. Make sure you have plenty of fuel going to the rail and that you have a very high quality FPR that can be adjusted along with a fuel pressure gauge. Even stock these cars run lean. I could show you pics of my original stock turbo that had about 50,000 miles on it when the car was completely stock. It cracked the housing in like 4 places. Check your plugs and if they are not a nice brownish color and are light to white you are to lean and will damage your motor, Turbo etc. If you are too rich you will soak your oil and it will wear your rings out really fast. I think that you need too research what you are doing and hopefully you will get the right info that will work for you. You can buy a lot of stuff and still be stuck where you are at. MMCD is a free program that works on a lot of PDA. It is an excellent program for being free. You will need a data cable which can be made by yourself or picked up on ebay for like $20. Just my 2 cents worth.
