my buddy bought a 1995 tsi awd. we went to put a clutch in it and found there was no transfercase and no drive shaft. i have a transfercase from a 1991 tsi. but will a 1991 driveshaft work on a 1995. the 1991 was a auto, and the 1995 is a 5 speed.

The 91-96 are the same as long as they are manual. Same for the autos. The autos and manuals wont interchange though.

An auto transfer case wont work, you can use 91-96 transfer case from a manual car. 97-99 are different. You need a 2g drive shaft. Was it driven without the transfer case?

yes the guy said he drove the car like this.

Then the transmission might need to be repaired too, that could destroy the viscous coupler and possibly do other damage. Why were you installing a clutch? did it feel like it was slipping? if so thats what it feels like to try and drive without the transfer case and it may not be the clutch.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I have a question similar to this and can not find anything from searching. I am looking at a GSX that has had the drive shaft broken, and the rest of the car seems great otherwise.

Everything is still there except the drive shaft and I am not sure if he drove without it or not, in case he has though I was wondering how badly that would damage anything? Is it the same as without the transfer case damage wise? There are receipts showing recent transmission replacement on the car.

if it was driven very much the VC is probably toast. t-case in these is just a direction converter so yeah the same thing applies.

this does not mean the 'transmission needs rebuilt' though. a dirt cheap solution that would make you derivable would be a VCE. and really the only way to know if your VC is toast is to fix the driveshaft and drive the car.

they fail open though, so with a fixed axle and a toast VE it will drive, but it will feal like driving a FF car sort of.

a VCE would allow you to not fix the drive shaft right away and just drive it in FF mode also.

Cool thanks for the info man.
