DIY Intercooler Sprayers

Hi everyone, I just thought I'd share my homemade intercooler sprayer setup :) The only part required was a $10 universal windshield washer kit, so it's a very cost-effective way to reduce intake temps if you don't have the $$ for a FMIC yet.

This is pretty much the kit I bought, cost $10

Here you can kinda see how the bottle is mounted:

Fluid check valve (had one lying around, dunno what they're worth):

This is kinda hard to tell, but that is the fluid line running to the bottom of the sprayer nozzle. The nozzle itself is mounted just in the plastic shroud by the intercooler.

Wiring was pretty simple; rather than run new wires through the firewall, I just hooked it up to the foglight relay. Now, the foglight button (to the left of the instrument cluster) turns on the sprayers.

That looks a lot cleaner than some of the other DIY Ive seen around. Good job.

What are you using for fluid? Actual washer fluid?
 
Not bad for $10. Have any logs on temp decreases? It looks like you could use a bit more of a mist though.
 
You should post where you got the kit for 10$ i am interested in doing this

I got the kit from Princess Auto, I'm pretty sure it's a Canadian only store, but any generic kit should work.

Sorry, I don't recall exactly how it went. I took power directly from the battery and ran wires from the relay box for the switch.

Yup, washer fluid. Get the stuff that contains methanol, and it's close to a 50% mix iirc.

Not bad for $10. Have any logs on temp decreases? It looks like you could use a bit more of a mist though.

Sorry, I won't have any datalogging capabilities until next week when my megasquirt arrives :) I'll get some then though, but the butt-dyno is satisfied.
 
Nice idea, the only bad thing I can see is after the spray goes through the IC it ends up under the right tire (not the best idea). Now for a front mount now your talking;)
 
Adding ice to the sprayer would likely have little effect, as sprayers themselves have little effect, but the comment about washer fluid hitting your one tire is definitely valid. I'd look into it at least. I'm not sure how well rubber and methanol get along.
Maybe some kind of mist-trap is an order, haha I dunno..

Either way I think it was a well executed idea. Props.
 
I relocated my evo one from the engine to the trunk. You will see and fell some type of change if you use more of a methanol mixture. Something that ends up cold while drying. If you use rubbing alky it will more than likely dry before even affecting the tire issue. Problem here now will be the seals and vacuum hose drying out before long. So maybe using a more corrosive resistent hoses and seals. I haven't had any problems yet. And I did mine in the trunk to space up some room for a DIY duct work from bumper to intake in my 2003 evo. Here is a pic of it:

But overall I really like your DIY, I only wish I had found the Uni-washer bottle before my Uni-rad bottle LOL.

I pretty much did the same thing but used the factory washer res. and ran in a manuel/ over ride switch. Also I mixed 50/50 Water and Acohol.

Good choice, what drove you that direction? They are fairly simple, but require much reading and soldering(if you don't enjoy it now, you'll hate it after), and have a fair amount of frustration involved on most installs.

You could also use an auxiliary output of MS to activate the sprayer at x boost or x IAT ;)
 
Ever notice how few cars run IC sprayers? They don't hurt anything. But they don't help much, either.

True. Only car ive seen with a set up like that was an STI i drove when i worked at a body shop. it looked like it was all stock. i figured it made more sense on a top mount IC where it really would get hot.

What about those CO2/NOS IC sprayer kits? how effective are those puppies?

I've already put one together myself for an older project (4g64 in a hyundai stellar), but scrapped that and sold it. I loved the system though and I've been itching to get back into it. It's come a long way in 4 years haha... I'm actually getting the new one with the surface-mount board w/dual MAP sensors, so no soldering for me :)
