dead tranny

Yesterday i was driving and then i slowed to a stopped and i heard this clunking noise. I am like WTF, continue to drive and i hear a whining noise. Turn it off and talk to a few friends come back to it everything is fine. I am like ok? This morning i am on my way to the mistu dealership where i work and i can't get it into fifth gear. No matter how hard i try to push it over nothing works. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th are all ok but 5th and reverse are impossible to get into. The stick will not even move over that far. My question is do i need a new tranny or what? If i need a new tranny i am going jsheperd tranny

hey whats up chris. thanks for the offer on storing the evo, if i get a few more i just might have people paying ME to store it, j/k. ok on your tranny. brandon had a ver similar problem i believe. what it originally sounded like is your synchros are shot. if its just 5th gear and the other work fine that is more than likely what it is. that would explain why 1-4th are easy, the synchros fall into place an allow the gears to engage in the tranny. if the synchros are shot it will be next to impossible for the gears to line up. the only way to fix that is to order new 5ht gear synchros, pull the tranny, rip it apart and replace them. thats my conclusion on this

If you can't move the shifter over to the right, where 5th and Reverse are, I don't see how it could be synchronizers. Reverse isn't synchronized, it does have a brake that is built into the endcover. More likely a problem with the actual shifting mechanism or the hammer looking jobs(don't know technical term) that are part of the rails keeping you from engaging the 5th/rev shift rail.
