OK so I have been hacking away at the front bumper trying to identify where the hang up is on my new bumper cover...(I hit a guard rail shhhh i'm not paying for it)
anyways, i have a 95 it's got a big white fiberglass type bumper that gets me all itchy after I cut it.

is there any alternative to cutting this or a better way than a circular saw cause really I can't get the angle where i need it with this piece of shit!

ok, and if anyone wants pics I can post some just say "PICS!"

Use a Sawzall. The short, thick blade will let you get it cut where it needs to be cut.

Wear some latex gloves before you handle the fiberglass. Even wear a mask to keep the fumes from burning fiberglass (the Sawzall tends to get it hot and it smokes) and the cast-off fibers out of your lungs.

Pics, just to see what you're doing, please. :)

so I need some latex gloves... check, a face mask...check
and then a sawzall...not check, does home depot rent these out? anyone rent them out I can't afford to buy one for such little amount of cutting.

PICS:

viola!

Just borrow one from a friend. But if you don't know of any, I believe Autozone or something of the like will rent one out to you. It literally takes 2 minutes once you get the tool up and running.

A belt sander with a real course belt would do pretty well going by the pictures, just be sure to dress appropriately :)

well I went ahead and took the bumper off and fitted the cover, it lines up really nice and def is a tight fit...not many gaps...theres a few places I notice but I seriously doubt anyone who isn't a body shop would notice the tiny minor things...

but heres a new question, lets say I don't want to cut the 5 mile hour bumper...Umm is this gonna be a big issua if I hit something(not that i plan on it but it happens)
I really don't want to die because I decided to go with aesthetics rather than saftey.

let me know what you guys think...

I would figure an auto place wouldn't rent a sawzall thats just obscure...WTF

went through the same thing first tried a dremmel but that took forever and melted everything. Switched over to a saw-swal with a fine tooth blade prob. took 5 minutes. Find a Rent-all store or something.

5 hours with a belt sander and you still wouldn't be done. That thing is pretty damn tough.

Many DSMers are running without their bumper. In a crash, it won't do much over 5-10 mph, but I keep mine on just for peace of mind.

The bumper does do something no matter how fast you are going. Research it. The bumper is there to implode the car in on itself during a frontal collision, causing the right side to push on the left and vise versa, slowing the impact down dramatically. Without a bumper, the panels go out away from each other, and you will end up having an engine sitting on your lap without it. Dont drive without it you need it, think about it this way, the bumper bends in the middle, it pulls the right bumper support toward the middle and same with the left. Pretty soon pieces are hitting each other side to side rather than front to back, causing the momentum to be across the car rather than down the middle. This makes all the momentum move in a criss cross patern, and keeps most of the impact away from the driver.
