I just got done putting in a tranny, and all that needs to be done is to adjust the clutch a bit. But my question is, with the car off, I tried going in to all the gears to see how it is and I've noticed a couple things:

1. There is very little play when moving the shifter to the left when in neutral. It can go all the way to the far right, but barely to the left.

2. Some of the gears seem almost "empty". For example, there is very little resistance when going in to the gears and very little when coming out. It's mainly with 1st, 2nd, and 5th gear.

3. Shifter will not go into reverse gear. Feels like something is blocking it. (Did not try this with the car on).

Let me know what you guys think.

Pull the underhood rubber bushings out and replace them with skate bearings, that will give a more defined feeling. As far as the side to side movement, that sounds like the shifter cables arent adjusted properly....remove shifter boot and try adjusting the cables. Try that stuff and give an update :)

Thanks for the reply, most people have been telling me it's the shifter cable and linkage issue.

Yes almost definitely shifter cables, also check the bracket that holds the cables onto the transmission, if that bracket comes loose you'll have hell trying to go into fifth and reverse.

I doubt anything is loose on the transmission, every bolt is pretty much rusted on there. Also, what is that flap on the transmission that moves side to side?

What year tranny? Are both shifter brackets on the tranny exactly the same as the old tranny?

Assuming they are the same brackets;
Did you put the right rod into the right slot? Just for haha's, I'd swap them to if it's in backwards.
Also, i've seen people put the bracket in backwards too.

My tranny did this when I swapped from the 22 spline to a 23 spline. Check the cables, brackets, and shifter base. Do you know what the spline count on that tranny is? If it's for the car in your profile it should be a 23. The only other thing I could think of that hasn't been suggested is maybe the nut has backed out inside the trns itself but that shouldn't limit the side to side travel so......

Ok yes it was a shifter linkage problem. But i still have trouble going into reverse and 5th gear, i have to go really really far right to get it in gear. Oh well, i'm not complaining. Transmission works fine. Thanks for the help guys.
