Coolant overflow tank as oil catch can?

Well I tried to make my over flow tank a catch can and it didnt work properly. When I got it al lgood to try I took it out for a test drive. After a few hard pulls smoke was comming out from under my hood. Took it home dipstick had poped out. Now befoe I did this it woudnt pop out at all. Is the cap to restrictive for proper function? Is there a way I can construct the overflow tank to work as a properly working catch can?

Do you have a breather or way for you crank case pressure to escape?

If youre using the overflow tank as a catch can what are you using for an overflow tank? Just wondering cause you kind of need that for proper coolant cooling.

But anyway, sounds like youre getting too much back pressure from the can. To work like a breather you would need the tube leading in carrying oil and a second port to atmosphere to relieve pressure, both of which on the top of the can itself.

I was trying to set it up simmular to stock. I did a lil more research and I dont think it will work correctly as a oil catch can. I actully pluged the nipple for the coolant overflow on the thermastat housing. Worse case if I notice cooling issues Ill put it back in.

I originally had just a tube from VC to the intake pipe but figured Id try Using the overflow tank as a catch can. So I ran a hose from the VC to over flow and then from over flow to the intake pipe. But I think the cap would need to be modded to work properly.

You need space fr expansion in your coolant system, there needs to be a place for the coolant to go when it gets hot and then to be sucked back in when the car cools down.

+1 on this... clean the oil out of your overflow and buy a catch can... I'd say you were pressuring up the overflow can to the point where the PCV valve was essentially 'plugged' with positive pressure on the overflow side of it

Yeah it was worth a shot. I had to buy a new line to go from VC to intake ### I had cut it and the vacuum fitting was restricting it. I out the overflow can back on and put new line in and all is back to normal.
