so i just got to start my car for the first time today :rocks: and it runs awsome but when i start to let out the clutch it makes a grinding noise almost like rusted rotors and it does it no matter gear im in (but the cars on jack stands ) does anyone know what this can be? i plan on swapping the tranny out due to a crack in the bell housing but i need a lift to do it so i was hoping to be able to drive it to my dads shop. if anyone knows what this could be thatd be awsome

Have you recently had the tranny removed? For a new clutch or TOB? If so the tranny could not be fully flush with the engine. Ive had many problems with the thin metal plate being just a lil off. Which in turned made the tranny not meet up fully. Which can cause the starter to grind, gears not meet up right etc. etc.

Have you inspected the clutch disc? I would be worried that there may be metal to metal contact on your flywheel. I would definitely crack it open and take a look before running the car anymore.

Recently had a similar problem. All 4 of my tranny bolts were loose. (My motor shakes alot). Must have not been lining somthing up right and causing a grindin noise. The crack in the bell housing might be knocking something out of alignment.

thanks for the info guys do you think itcould be cause my motor mount isnt all the way on and it could be shaking the transmission alot? cause now that i think about it the clutch seems to grind to the vibration of the motor

That could possibly be the problem. Make sure everything is tight and sealed up. If you're still having the problem maybe check your clutch adjustment.

Check your trans to engine bolts. Make sure they are tight. This will cause the clutch to not release and as a result, your clutch pedal may have been readjusted to compensate, which is bad.

Check your mounts. I've never seen one get bad enough it grounded but I guess it could happen. I don't think this is the issue, as that noise would be different. Still a good idea to check as these cars are getting older and more miles.

Check where the clutch fork comes through the trans case. It should be centered in the hole with the clutch let out. Check with it not running. If it's heavily biased to one side of the hole, you've got peddle pump up. Need to readjust your clutch pedal. If the pedal has been misadjusted a long time, it will damage the throw out bearing because it's riding against the clutch fingers all the time due to an amount of constant pressure. Basically, it will wear it out.

If the car has been setting any amount of time, your pads/rotors could be rusty.

Last, it could be possible that you have a bad wheel bearing, which will only make noise while the wheels are rotating, like the brakes.

ya im hoping its just like a lose bolt or something im gonna go check everything right now but do you think it could possibly go away if i try bleeding it? like isaid a whole new tranny and 6 puck clutch is going in the car hopefully sunday the only problem is i planned on being able to drive it to my dads shop so i dont have to crawl under the car anymore

okay i just looked over the car the bolt to the tranny/motor are all tight the 2 things i noticed where that the thin metal plate is bent if you look under the car and could be touching the fly wheel but i feel likee that would make a noise at all times the other thing ive noticed is that the front transmission mount is on but its not tight which could be causing excess vibration?
